Start NOW Program at Delaware Tech

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide opportunities for personal growth, self improvement and academic achievement among out of school youth within our community. These goals are implemented through a highly structured, non- traditional environment; integrating training mentoring and diverse educational activities.

Purpose
Our purpose is to prepare youth facing serious barriers to employment by providing training and other services that will result in an increase in employability , earnings, educational and occupational skill credentials and decreased welfare dependency; thereby improving the quality of the workforce and enhancing its productivity and competitiveness.

Who is eligible to participate?

  • 21 participants for the program year (fall term and spring
    term totals)
  • 16 – 21 years of age at the time of enrollment
  • Underemployed or Unemployed previous 6 months
  • Requires additional assistance to complete an educational program, or secure or hold employment
  • Majority of participants must meet income eligibility
    guidelines (DOL criteria)

The Training Program

  • Employability and Life Skills Workshop (13 weeks)
  • A one semester, twice a week Grove class
  • Subsidized Job Shadowing experience at Delaware Tech
    (4 weeks)
  • Subsidized employment experience (4 weeks)
  • Job placement assistance (on-going)
  • Follow up (12 months following placement)

Employability and Life Skills Workshop

  • Workshop to begin on September 15, 2008
  • Approximately 13 - 15 seats available for this workshop
  • Mandatory attendance daily
  • Monday - Thursday classes four hours a day to include some GED preparation for a minimum of 13 weeks totaling 176 hours
  • Job search lab once a week for 4 hours until employment is obtained and completion of all program goals
  • Interactive course…not lecture based
  • Topics
    • Orientation to the college
    • Interview techniques
    • Resume development
    • The job search process
    • Handling conflict
    • Managing change
    • Technology in the workplace
    • Leadership
    • Effective communication
    • Dressing for success
    • Employer expectations
  • Earn a Delaware Technical & Community College Certificate that is a credential recognized by employers and educators.

General Educational Development

  • GED classroom meets daily in room 356 - This is a required class for each student
  • Individual schedules will be available for each student
  • Classroom work is guided toward taking and passing the OPT(Practice Test) and the GED

Subsidized job shadowing at Delaware Tech

  • Purpose: build work experience and practice job skills learned during workshop
  • Job Shadowing experiences will take place at Wilmington & Stanton Campuses of Delaware Tech
  • Experiences
    • Building & Grounds
    • Mail Room
    • Office Clerical
    • Cafeteria
    • Library
  • Students enrolled in the Program’s Employability and Life Skills Workshop will be placed in paid Job Shadowing experience on Campus
    • 4 weeks
    • 12 hours per week
  • Sample Day (3rd week of program)
    • 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Career Development/GED)
    • 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM (Job Shadowing) or
    • 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM (Job Shadowing)
Subsidized employment
  • Available for the majority of participants upon successful completion of the program’s Employability and Life Skills Workshop
  • Partnerships with hospitality based organizations (Sheraton Suites)
  • 3 - 4 weeks to complete 80 hours
  • Majority of experiences will lead to permanent employment
Job placement assistance and follow up
  • Full time Student Enrichment Coordinator will assist
    all participants with job placement
  • Program staff will continue to provide services to participants for 12 months following job placement to ensure participant success
