MS/DOS Network Client Install

The following procedure assumes MS/DOS loaded onto C: drive of desired computer. If this is for an unattended student NT lab install, highly recommended that the computer is freshly formatted and empty except for MS/DOS.

Actions taken at any DOS capable station

  1. Create a bootable MS/DOS floppy.
    1. Find computer with desired DOS on it.
    2. Enter command: FORMAT A:/S

Actions taken at NT server

  1. Log in to NT server as Administrator
  2. Insert diskette prepared above in A: drive
  3. Run "Network Client Administrator"
Start -> Programs -> Administrator Tools -> Network Client Administrator
  4. Choose "Make Network Client Installation Disk"
  5. Hit "OK" at next prompt
(You should configure the CLIENT share if not already setup, however)
  6. At next dialog box choose:
  7. Hit OK when done above
  8. On next dialog box...
  9. Click OK, disk will be made
Now you need to edit the A:\NET\LMHOSTS file on the floppy... Otherwise the server will not be locatable when you boot... You also need to make a minor change to the autoexec.bat file on the floppy...
  1. Edit A:\NET\LMHOSTS file
  2. Edit A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

Actions taken at client station

  1. Boot computer off of floppy made above.
(No errors should occur during booting)
  2. Press RETURN for username.
It should be the value you entered in above. If not your real username, enter it instead.
  3. Enter correct password
  4. Do not bother creating a password list. Answer N
Test the network connection by attempting to set the clock over the net If net is not working, this command will fail. Debug it before going on. Check a:\net\protocol.ini and a:\net\tcputils.ini for correct values
At this point, you can mount shares with the NET USE command. The hosts that you want to connect to must be listed in the A:\NET\LMHOSTS file. If you want domain resolving, you will need to install the DNR stuff. Look at these examples as a guide. Again, the above changes for DNS resolving are not needed if all you want to do is get to a share. All you need to get to a share is to define the hostname in the A:\NET\LMHOSTS file.
