NT Deployment goals
The following goals for NT implementation have been defined by the Computer
Services department:
- Use same username and password as is used to access the UNIX systems
- Files are stored in same home directory as is used for Win 3.1 and
UNIX access
- The local desktop must be secure. User must not be able to alter system
files, or install trojan software and/or viruses, whether accidentally or
maliciously.
- Consistency. Each NT workstation should work in a consistent manner.
Where possible through licensing and equipment capability, each station should
also have identical sets of software installed.
- If a user changes settings such as desktop icons, start
menu contents, or background colors, those changes should only affect that
user.
- The above changes made by a user should automatically be applied to
each NT workstation the user logs in to.
This is often referred to as "roving profiles."
- Password encryption. The transmission of "clear text" passwords over
the network by NT clients during authentication should not be allowed.
