Group Policies

Windows XP provides us with the means to deploy group policies which customize the behavior of logons based on the location of the computer and/or the user that is using it.

Two examples of new group policies (these only apply to Windows XP):

  1. The Shutdown button has been removed from the Start menu as well as the workstation lock screen. To shut a computer down, you must first log off and then click options, then select shut down. This has been done to discourage people from shutting down their computers. It is important to leave your computer running over night. During the night, new anti-virus definitions are deployed to all workstations. Other maintenance tasks are also performed remotely overnight.
  2. By popular demand, a policy has been put into place that restricts students from logging into faculty and staff workstations as well as instructor stations in labs and multimedia classrooms. If this policy is not desirable for a given workstation, please submit a workorder and note which station should allow student logons. It will be removed from this policy.
