The above command will create a directory named www on your account
and set the permissions properly to allow the web server to access it.
If you ever get a permission denied error while trying to view your homepage,
run this command again. Running it multiple times is fine.
Create/Edit your homepage. If you know HTML you can edit the code "raw" using
a simple text editor on Hopi or Zuni (like pico, vi, or emacs). You may
also use Netscape Gold to create your pages. These instructions assume
you will be using Netscape Gold.
Run Netscape Gold (if you haven't already). From the File menu, chose
New Document and choose one of the options. Or, if you prefer, find a page
on the net somewhere that you like, hit the Edit tool button (looks like
a pencil) and save it to a file on your account.
Edit your page as desired.
All pages should be saved to the www directory (F:\WWW)
Name the "home" page "index.htm"
Log into UNIX on hopi or zuni and execute the "homepage" command
again to ensure permissions on the files you saved are correct.
Test your home page by using Netscape, Lynx, or another browser. If
using Netscape, enter a Location of http://www.dtcc.edu/~yourid/ where
yourid is your own user ID. If your page does not display, you did something
wrong. Review the above directions again. If you still have problems, ask
a tech in room 265.
Run your page(s) through a
web validator
to check for errors, or use
the weblint command on hopi.
Optionally, if you want your name to appear in the list of Delaware
Tech Home Pages, send e-mail to weave
and ask that your page be added to the list.
If you ever need to change your home page, simply browse to it, press
the edit button, make changes, then re-save it using the above procedure.
