Delaware

Where to Stay

Actually planning on spending more than one day in Delaware? There's quite a large selection of web pages pointing to hotels, bed and breakfasts and even a few camping sites for those who love the outdoors. This stuff is always changing, so drop me a line if you have a change request. I appreciate the help in keeping these pages a useful resource.

Entire State Indexes

The links below point you to additional pages throughout the state. Some of them are provided by third party reservation services, and others by the chains themselves. Therefore, some properties are actually listed in more than one index. It might actually pay to "shop around" and check them all. TravelWeb lists both chain and independent hotels. It apparently takes reservations and confirmations on-line. Above link is a pre-programmed search for Delaware area locations. At least I hope it is. Seems like they change their programming every few months forcing me to recode the URL to make it work. Links are included on the page to go to their home page or for more information. [first reviewed: 02sep96; url-updated: 30mar97] Travel Now is another third party reservation service, listing about 30 properties of various hotels throughout Delaware last time I checked. They also claim to allow you to reserve a room on-line. [reviewed: 02sep96]

Individual Hotel Information

If I was using stars to rate sites, this one would get rate near the top. Not only does it give links to check room and hotel information, but also has a lot of good information on area tourist attractions. There are also pictures of the property and rooms. The Brandywine Inn is located on Concord Pike, north of Wilmington on U.S. 202. [reviewed: 02oct96] Choice Hotels includes hotels under several different property names. Select the one you are interested from the above selection box, then press the search button. All the options have been pre-programmed for you, as always, to help you find Delaware info fast!

The site advertises room availability and reservation service. Many locations offer discounts for Internet reservations! However, when I first tried it, I find the reservation page a bit hard to find. When looking at the property info, click on "rooms" or "room info" to check on availability and optionally book a room. [reviewed: 02sep96]

Hampton Inn - Newark has the distinction of being the first hotel in Delaware with a web page that I found. It was in the earliest of the Delaware indexes a long long time ago (er, 1994!). Both links take you to property information and allow on-line reservations. Unfortunately, they are not using a secure web server, so sending credit card info to them over a non-secure channel is about as risky as letting a clerk in the store run it and not getting the carbons (ie, not too risky, but if you're paranoid...) [reviewed: 02sep96] Hilton's two Delaware locations have web pages on their corporate server. You can find out about the hotel's facilities, room amenities, recreational activities, map and directions to the property, and special offers. On-line reservations, pricing, and room availability pages are available through their secured web server. [reviewed: 02sep96] Holiday Inn web site allows you to check room availability, get pricing, and optionally make a reservation. The server doesn't appear top be a secure server, so I'd recommend skipping the last step if you're paranoid. Press the button above to search Holiday Inn's Delaware hotel database. (It's a bit anti-climatic though. I'll spoil it by letting you know they only have three locations in Delaware; Concord Pike, Downtown Wilmington, and exit 3 of I-95 near Newark). [reviewed: 04sep96] Short description of properties with map of location. No on-line reservation capability, although you can book Sheraton over Travelweb (see above). [reviewed: 14dec96] The above pages are usually put up by each property on its own, without help from a corporate owner (indeed, since many of them are privately own). Therefore, they usually don't have fancy capabilities like on-line reservations.

Bed and Breakfasts

For a personal touch, consider a Bed and Breakfast. I personally recommend a B&B down the beach during the off-season to help calm the nerves! Located in Lewes. I spent a really nice night there during February, '96 so I can personally vouch for how nice it is. The web site contains pictures and info about the property, and tourist information about Lewes. [reviewed: 16oct96] Very attractive web page, with several pictures of the property. The joint even includes a pool, which many B&Bs don't offer. [reviewed: 03jan97]

Camping

Not many web sites that talk about camp sites, I'm afraid. Five state parks have camping sites available. This web page gives you very minimal information on each site and a phone number to call for more information. RV park, no tent camping from the looks of their page. Rates published on the page. No on-line reservations, although an e-mail address is available to get more information. [reviewed: 02sep96]

All reviews, comments, and opinions are the sole opinion of the author. Inclusion of sites on this page (or others) do not mean that I endorse the sites. Commentary is meant as a guide only. For example, indications that a site accepts reservations does not constitute a guarantee on my part that it will actually work or that I've verified the service. It is just from personal observation while visiting the site.
