What is E-Learning?

E-Learning Banner

An E-Learning course at Delaware Tech can be delivered two ways: completely at a distance with use of Blackboard or as a distributed-learning course. Students taking courses completely at a distance are not required to attend class at any specific location. It is noted, however, that with two-way interactive videoconferencing students must be at a campus in one of the Distance Learning Classrooms to participate.

E-Learning courses offered completely at a distance include:

Tests can be given online, in any of the campus testing centers or via proctor. Books, videotapes, CDs and DVDs can be ordered through the bookstore.

Distributed Learning courses allow students and faculty the ability to interact outside the traditional class meeting times. Distributed learning courses require students to meet on campus for 50 percent of scheduled classes; the remaining time can be spent in either a service learning environment whereby students and instructor work in the field or in learning activities within Blackboard.

E-Learning Courses Offered at a Distance

Teleweb Courses – Teleweb courses are videotaped courses provided by a commercial vendor or created in-house. Students may receive the videotapes at the time of registration from a campus bookstore or through mail order. Supplemental course material and student-student and instructor-student interaction is accomplished in Blackboard. Various teleweb courses may require students to come to a campus location for oral presentations. Teleweb courses are designated in the course schedule with a section letter of T.

Two-way interactive videoconferencing – Each of the four Delaware Tech locations is equipped with a two-way videoconferencing system that can connect one campus to another or all four locations simultaneously. Each room is also equipped with a computer and document camera. Classes meet in the Distance Learning Classroom (DLC), and the instructor is encouraged to rotate from campus to campus. These courses are designated in the course schedule with a section letter of V.

Fully web-based – Fully web-based courses, also known as online courses, are offered through the password-protected instructional management system Blackboard. Course content is available 24 hours a day and communication takes place through email, discussion forums or chat sessions. These courses are designated in the course schedule with a section letter of W.

CD/DVD – These courses are available on a computer CD and can be taken using a tutorial-style program at a computer work station. These courses are designated in the course schedule with a section letter of C.

Distributed Learning Courses

Students taking a course designated distributed learning that will use Blackboard should understand that they will need access to a computer, e-mail, the World Wide Web and various computer software. These requirements may not necessarily be listed in the schedule of classes.

Distributed learning courses will be categorized in each campus course schedule under a separate heading. Each section contains a campus designation. The campuses are identified as 2 = Owens, 4 = Wilmington, 5 = Stanton, and 6 = Terry. Meeting dates will be listed.  These courses will be designated in the course schedule with a section letter of D.
