Dr. Doug Hicks has served as the department chair for the Engineering
Technologies Department since he began working at Delaware Technical
& Community College in 1997. He received his bachelor’s
degree in physical oceanography from Cook College/Rutgers University
in 1997 and his master’s and doctoral degrees in applied
ocean science fro the University of Delaware in 1980 and 1985,
respectively. Upon completing his graduate studies, Dr. Hicks
started a business, CHPT Manufacturing, Inc., to commercialize
several of the patents he was awarded in graduate school related
to high pressure pumps and seawater desalination technology.
One of the patents was fully commercialized into a line of high
pressure pumps under the trade names DELPUMP™ and Aquapump™
and is now under license for production by a large international
manufacturer. The pumps are constructed from composite materials
and engineering polymers and are used extensively in military
water purification equipment in the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Hicks
also holds eight patents covering a broad range of technology
including food dispensing equipment, alternative energy systems,
chemical monitoring instrumentation, and windsurfing equipment.
Along with management oversight, Dr. Hicks has served as the
lead designer for CHPT for the last 12 years and has been involved
in the design and production of over 300 custom systems, devices,
and components for the manufacturing, oceanographic, pharmaceutical,
food processing, and materials processing industries. In addition
to managing the Engineering Technologies Department, teaching,
and doing design work with CHPT, Dr. Hicks serves on the board
of directors for the Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership
and as vice commodore for the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association.
He has always been a beach enthusiast and enjoys surfing, windsurfing,
and sailing in the Rehoboth Beach area, where he lives with
his wife and two daughters. |

Mr. Pedersen has been a full-time instructor in the
Engineering Technologies Department since 1999; he began working
part-time for the college in 1996. In 2004, he received the
Delaware Technical & Community College Excellence in Teaching
Award. In 1984, he earned a
bachelor's degree in economics from Vassar College; he went on
to receive a Masters degree in architecture from Tulane
University in 1989. His architectural experience includes work
with a variety of architects, engineers, and other building
professionals in California, Louisiana, Maryland, and Delaware
on a wide range of commercial and residential projects. He is a
Georgetown resident and Georgetown Planning & Zoning
Commissioner. He is a board trustee of Preservation
Delaware Inc., a statewide
nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of
Delaware's architectural heritage and historic settings,
and La Red Health Center, which provides affordable, quality
health care to residents of Sussex County. In his spare
time, Mr. Pedersen enjoys travel, gardening, reading, chess and
spending time with his son and daughter, fiance, and extended
family. |

Mr. Roach has been a full-time instructor in the Engineering
Technologies Department since 1990. He earned an associate degree
in civil engineering technology from Delaware Tech, Owens Campus
in 1978, a bachelor’s degree in transportation engineering
from Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg in 1980, and
a master’s in instruction from Wilmington College in 1995.
In 2001, he received the Delaware Technical & Community
College Excellence in Teaching Award. Mr. Roach is a
registered professional engineer (PE) in the state of Delaware.
He has more than
12 years of professional experience working as a field engineer,
cost estimator, and project superintendent. His construction
experience includes highway projects, subdivisions, and private
sites in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. He also worked for
two years as a project engineer installing process plants in
Arkansas, New Mexico, and Nebraska. Mr. Roach
owns John B. Roach Engineering, L.L.C., a surveying and
engineering company that consults with private clients on a part
time basis. He is a past Georgetown Town Councilman and served as president of the Howard T. Ennis School
PTO. Mr. Roach was born and raised
in Georgetown where he lives with his wife and three children. |

Bill Suess

Mr. Suess has been an instructor in the Engineering Technologies
Department since 2000. He earned a bachelor’s degree in
industrial arts education from Millersville University in 1983
and a master’s degree in vocational studies from the University
of Delaware in 1994. Along with his 15 years of secondary education
teaching experience, he has more than 10 years of design and
construction experience. Since 1992, he has owned and operated
Suess Design Works, a design/build construction firm based in
Milton, Delaware that specializes in custom residential work.
Mr. Suess was named Cape Henlopen High School Teacher of the Year
in 1998, has served as president of the Delaware Technology
Education Association, and was awarded a patent for a roof truss
storage system in 1995. He lives with his family in Milton and
enjoys archery and fishing with his children in his spare time. |
