Dr. Doug received his bachelor's degree in physical oceanography from Cook College/Rutgers University in 1977 and his master's and doctoral degrees in applied ocean science from the University of Delaware in 1980 and 1985, respectively. Prior to coming to DTCC in 1997 he started a business, CHPT Manufacturing, Inc., to commercialize several of the patents he was awarded in graduate school. One of the patents cover a line of composite high pressure, seawater desalination pumps sold under the trade names DELPUMP TM by CHPT and Aquapump TM by the FMC Corporation. Dr. Hicks has been awarded eight patents covering a broad range of technology including food dispensing equipment, alternative energy systems, chemical monitoring instrumentation, and windsurfing equipment. Along with management oversight, Dr. Hicks serves as CHPT's lead designer and has been involved in the design and production of over 300 custom systems, devices, and components for the manufacturing, oceanographic, pharmaceutical, food processing, and materials processing industries. In addition to managing the Engineering Technologies Department, teaching, and doing design work with CHPT, Dr. Hicks serves on the board of directors for the Delaware Manufacturing Extension Partnership, the advisory boards for the Univ. of Delaware Engineering Technology Program, Delmar High School Technology program, and the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association. He has always been a beach enthusiast and enjoys surfing, windsurfing, and sailing in the Rehoboth Beach area, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. |

Mr. Pedersen has been a full-time instructor in the Engineering Technologies Department since 1999. In 2004, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award given by Delaware Technical & Community College. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Vassar College in 1984 and received a master’s degree in architecture from Tulane University in 1989. Mr. Pedersen is a registered architect (RA) in the state of Delaware and a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). His architectural experience includes working with a variety of architects, engineers, and other building professionals in California, Louisiana, Maryland, and Delaware on a wide range of commercial and residential projects. A Georgetown resident, he serves on the Georgetown Planning & Zoning Commission, the board of directors for La Red Health Center and is a member of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service - his call is KB3NRV. Mr. Pedersen is involved with the green design movement and has been active in promoting sustainable design throughout the Engineering Technologies Department. Mr. Pedersen enjoys spending time with his family, volunteering, keeping up with current events, reading, and gardening. He also enjoys travel and has been to most of the 50 states, France, Japan and China.

John Roach, P.E.

Mr. Roach has been a full-time instructor in the Engineering
Technologies Department since 1990. He earned an associate degree
in civil engineering technology from Delaware Tech, Owens Campus
in 1978, a bachelor’s degree in transportation engineering
from Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg in 1980, and
a master’s in instruction from Wilmington College in 1995.
In 2001, he received the Delaware Technical & Community
College Excellence in Teaching Award. Mr. Roach is a
registered professional engineer (PE) in the state of Delaware.
He has more than
12 years of professional experience working as a field engineer,
cost estimator, and project superintendent. His construction
experience includes highway projects, subdivisions, and private
sites in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. He also worked for
two years as a project engineer installing process plants in
Arkansas, New Mexico, and Nebraska. Mr. Roach
owns John B. Roach Engineering, L.L.C., a surveying and
engineering company that consults with private clients on a part
time basis. He is a past Georgetown Town Councilman and served as president of the Howard T. Ennis School
PTO. Mr. Roach was born and raised
in Georgetown where he lives with his wife and three children. |

Bill Suess
Construction Management Technology

Mr. Suess has been an instructor in the Engineering Technologies
Department since 2000. He earned a bachelor’s degree in
industrial arts education from Millersville University in 1983
and a master’s degree in vocational studies from the University
of Delaware in 1994. Along with his 15 years of secondary education
teaching experience, he has more than 10 years of design and
construction experience. Since 1992, he has owned and operated
Suess Design Works, a design/build construction firm based in
Milton, Delaware that specializes in custom residential work.
Mr. Suess was named Cape Henlopen High School Teacher of the Year
in 1998, has served as president of the Delaware Technology
Education Association, and was awarded a patent for a roof truss
storage system in 1995. He lives with his family in Milton and
enjoys archery and fishing with his children in his spare time. |
