Welcome to the Automotive Technology Department
About Our Program

The Automotive Technology program at the Owens Campus gives students practical, hands-on training to prepare them for careers in the automotive service industry. As a NATEF/ASE Master Certified program, it meets the highest industry-approved standards for curriculum, instruction, and training equipment and systems. Each of these areas is reviewed, evaluated, and improved on an ongoing basis to ensure that it meets current industry needs and anticipates future ones. Our goal is to prepare today the automotive technicians of tomorrow.

Students may choose to complete a certificate or diploma option or a more advanced associate degree program. Through systematic core course instruction, technical course instruction, and completion of required lab tasks, associate degree graduates will learn to successfully utilize electronic information systems, specialized diagnostic tools, and other equipment to diagnose and repair state-of-the-art vehicles. Both preventive maintenance and emergency repairs will be addressed. Available courses in customer service relations and parts/service management prepare students to be well qualified for a variety of different positions.

StudentGraduates of the certificate program, who must be at a college academic level, will be able to enter the automotive industry as technician assistants, or, by meeting certain requirements, may transfer their earned credits toward the associate degree program. Diploma option students, required to successfully complete technical support courses along with basic automotive service instruction, may quickly enter the industry as a mechanic's helper or continue their studies toward an associate degree.

PROJECT VEHICLES

Currently, the automotive program has more than 30 vehicles of various makes and models. Some of the more interesting examples include:

  • 1989 Ford Mustang Drag Car
  • 1990 Supercharged Mustang
  • 1986 IROC Camaro Drag Car
  • 1965 Chevy II Fuel Injected
  • 1986 Chevy 4X4
  • 2000 Dodge Durango 4X4
  • 2002 Acura Type S
  • 2003 Honda Accord

ROAD TRIPS

As part of the automotive technology curriculum, it is important to see how the vehicles you will be working on are built. We travel to the Saturn and Daimler Chrysler assembly plants in Newark, Del. and the Harley-Davidson final assembly plant in York, Pa. As an added bonus, we travel to various car and truck events for the cultural experience. These include a swap meet in Carlisle, Pa.; a swap meet and car show in Englishtown, N.J.; and a car show in Harrington, Del. We also visit local dealerships and independent repair facilities to give students an inside look at their future in the automotive industry.

AUTOMOTIVE STUDENT CLUB - East Coast Performance

The East Coast Performance club participates in fund raisers, community events, and various college functions to raise awareness of the importance of today's highly skilled automotive technicians. Changes in technology have made this a constantly-evolving career field where continuing education is vital to successful job performance and customer satisfaction. Students raise money for our many project cars, road trips, and end-of-year parties that help make their time on campus so enjoyable and rewarding.
