Delaware Tech, UD leaders sign agreement as of 1/18/08
Delaware Technical & Community College and the University of Delaware celebrated Delaware Day by signing a new two-year agreement for UD to operate its Associate in Arts Program on Delaware Tech campuses in Wilmington, Dover and Georgetown.
The agreement was signed by Delaware Tech President Orlando J. George, Jr. and UD President Patrick Harker during a ceremony Friday, December 7, at Delaware Tech’s Wilmington campus. During the ceremony, both Dr. George and Dr. Harker took a moment to recognize the significance of the cooperative relationship between the two institutions.
An excited and passionate Dr. George remarked: “This partnership has been so successful because it benefits everyone involved. Delawareans benefit because they can earn an associate degree while pursuing a pathway to a baccalaureate without ever having to leave the community in which they live. Our institutions benefit because we are able to fulfill our missions of increasing educational opportunities for the citizens of this state. And last but not least, our state – its employers and taxpayers – have all benefited from the increased social and economic rewards that an educated workforce brings. And so I am pleased and honored to join with Dr. Harker in celebrating the success of this program by signing an agreement to continue what we began four decades ago and build on a very successful partnership.”
The UD Associate in Arts Program was initiated in 2004, replacing the former Parallel Program, which has been discontinued. The Associate in Arts program offers a set of courses that fulfill requirements not only for the associate degree itself but also general education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Under the agreement, Delaware Tech provides classrooms, offices and other facilities, as well as ancillary services such as libraries, bookstores and textbook orders, parking and security. UD is responsible for academic administration of the Associate in Arts program, including admission of students, academic advisement, instruction and associate degree conferral.
Students who complete the UD Associate in Arts Program are guaranteed a seat on the Newark campus with junior status in any of 28 majors that lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Students also can compete for seats in any of the other undergraduate majors offered on the main campus.
UD has seen strong success among students in the program. Of those who have earned the associate degree, 93 percent are continuing toward a bachelor’s degree on the Newark campus.

Culinary Arts Gives Back to the Community as of 1/18/08
On Sunday September 30, 2007, instructors and students from the Culinary Arts Department at Delaware Tech, Stanton campus prepared and cooked dinner at the Francis X Norton Center for the Ministry of Caring. The Ministry of Caring is a non-profit, ecumenical organization devoted to serving poor, homeless, and disadvantaged people in and around Wilmington, DE. The proceeds from the sale of tickets from this dinner contribute to resources such as food, shelter, job training and placement, child care, basic medical and dental care, a residence for people living with AIDS, clothing and household goods for those in need. The menu, which started with a hearty shrimp and corn chowder, seasonal salad with balsamic apple dressing, baked cranberry orange glazed chicken, seasonal vegetables, ended nicely with a corn bread pudding with candied walnuts and maple sweetened cream.
The donation of time and knowledge by the Culinary Arts Department is an example of what Delaware Tech means to the community we serve, and a testimony to the humanity and civic pride of both the students and employees of this institution. It was a fulfilling evening for everyone involved, as a room of very satisfied Ministry of Caring donators concluded their meal with a resounding round of applause for Delaware Tech.

Right Steps as of 1/18/08
Right Steps is an after school program collaboration between Delaware Tech and Girls Incorporated. The program is designed to serve a group of at-risk children, identified through Girls Inc, who range from ages 9 through 12. Throughout the academic school year, the Right Steps program provides social enrichment classes, career exploration, technology skill building and other various educational activities and mentoring services. Students in the program come to Delaware Tech for one hour, three days a week.
Right Steps latest project focused on the participants learning the basics of entrepreneurship. Classroom lessons and activities focused on teaching students how to start and run a small business, the importance of teamwork, good customer service skills, and most of all…how to make money! After six weeks of prep, the students put their newly gained knowledge to the test by hosting an entrepreneurship night at the Wilmington Campus. There were three shops for customers to browse and do their holiday shopping, including a craft shop, a bakery and a sub shop. The night was a huge success and lots of fun for everyone. Thanks to Delaware Tech students and faculty for their contributions and support!

Holiday Luncheon as of 1/18/08
We do a great many things here at Delaware Tech, one of which is throw a kicking party! And very few parties rival that of our annual Holiday Luncheon, hosted by Larry and Connie. Of course, the impressive spread put on by our own Culinary Arts students was not only excellent in presentation, but delicious as well. And how about those gingerbread houses and that chocolate fountain?

ACEC-DE Donates $1,000.00 to Delaware Tech as of 1/24/08
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Delaware (ACEC-DE) graciously donated $1,000.00 to Delaware Tech Stanton/Wilmington Campus. Tim Anderson, President of ACEC-DE, and Ted Williams, National Director for Delaware, were at the Stanton Location to present the check to a very pleased Dave Reinhold, Department Chair (AET/CAD/CET/CMT). The money has been used very creatively by Dave. To help defray some student out of pocket expense, Dave has used the ACEC-DE money to purchase course materials that students need, and in turn, provides those materials to the students at no cost.
Mr. Anderson was very happy to be involved in the project: “The ACEC of Delaware recognizes the importance of the various Delaware Tech engineering programs, as well as the level of excellence of graduates those programs produce. This is evidenced by our long standing relationship with Delaware Tech and our continued financial support of the programs. And we have nothing but the highest respect for the level of excellence of Delaware Tech graduates in the engineering field. We are so happy to be able to help students and to help the programs grow to ensure that level of excellence.”
The ACEC-DE donates $1,000.00 every year and is impressed with how Dave has put the money to good use. Congratulations and keep up the good work, Dave!

Administrative Services Division Keeps Stanton/Wilmington Going!
as of 1/24/08
While most of us were enjoying a long and relaxing holiday break, several dedicated members of the Administrative Services Division were hard at work ensuring the Stanton/Wilmington Campus stays operational. John Fogelgren, Director of Administrative Services, applauded everyone in his division who put forth the extra effort to guarantee the rest of us enjoy a comfortable and safe work environment.
“I’m so proud of these folks; they came on campus at both locations during the holiday break and worked so hard to provide a safe and agreeable atmosphere for their colleagues. They do so much behind the scenes and ask for no recognition. I’m happy to have them in my division and I know that everyone at Delaware Tech is fortunate to have the effort they put forth on a day to day basis.”
John then outlined the voluminous list of projects that were completed over the break:
Wilmington Location
- Installed new counter tops in the Child Development Center
- Conducted preventative maintenance and changed the filters on the 121 heat pumps, which helps to improve the air quality on Campus
- Installed new emergency exit doors at the previous entrance to the West Building
- Painted all floors in the loading dock area
- Completed new fire alarm and sprinkler system installation in the East Building, both of which passed final inspection
- Installed assistance phones in the parking lots

Senator Tom Carper Visits Delaware Tech as of 1/29/08
On Friday, January 25, 2008, Delaware Senator Tom Carper visited the Delaware Tech Wilmington location for a town hall meeting with students and faculty. The event, which was jointly hosted by the Student Government Association and the Business Club, was held in the Amphitheater and was attended by a combination of students and faculty, totally about 60 people.
During his hour visit, Senator Carper gave a detailed description of his background and his road to the Senate; covering topics from how he started in politics to the current legislation he authored covering emissions standards. He then opened the floor to questions and the students were up to the challenge, inquiring about tariffs on imported goods, the future of Social Security and Medicare in America, and two things that are on everyone’s mind… the proposed tax rebates and the economy. After about an hour of discussions, the Senator wrapped up the meeting and was duly impressed with how well-informed Delaware Tech students are regarding the current events of the day.
Delaware Tech is grateful to Senator Carper for taking time out of his day to meet with folks from our college community. Delaware Tech is also extremely grateful to have student organizations, such as the Student Government Association and the Business Club, that are active in their college community and committed to ensuring a wonderful college experience for their fellow students.

Sad Loss to the Delaware Tech Community
as of 1/24/08
On Saturday, January 19, 2008, the Delaware Tech Community suffered a tragic loss. Matthew Wellborn, a Delaware Tech graduate from the Computer-Aided Engineering Drafting and Design Technology died suddenly at home.
While at Delaware Tech, Matthew was President of the Student Government and the Computer Aided Drafting and Design Club. He was popular among fellow students and faculty alike, and was even used in a Delaware Tech ad campaign. Building on his success at Delaware Tech, Matthew went on to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Delaware. In August of 2004, Matthew suffered a serious stroke following heart surgery. During the past 3 years, Matthew was an inspiration to those who knew and cared for him as he attempted to recover from the effects of the stroke.
Born in Wilmington, DE on January 16, 1978, Matthew was the son of Margaret (Peg) and Paul Wellborn. He was very active in the Delaware Soccer community as a player, coach and referee. Matthew was a wonderful personification of a Delaware Tech graduate and he will be missed dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Easter Seals of Delaware, 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle, DE 19720 or to the University of Delaware Physical Therapy Clinic, 053 McKinly Lab, Newark, DE 19716. Folks may send online condolences by visiting www.dohertyfh.com.
