Unity Week Celebrated as of 3/26/08
By GERRY KAVANAUGH
During the week of March 17 through March 20, the Stanton Campus celebrated Unity Week, a week aimed at assisting the College’s commitment to raising global awareness among all members of the college community. The event involved activities and presentations about the following countries: Ireland, Colombia, India, and Liberia. Through the hard work of all members of the Diversity Club of the Stanton Campus including the club’s faculty advisors, Lou Spinelli and Jerry Kavanagh, the Campus was treated to a week of activities that were both educational and fun.
The week started on St. Patrick’s Day with a presentation and activities presented by Bill Christopher. The next day the events focused on Colombia led by Jerry Kavanagh and Gustavo Gravales. The dance lessons provided by Gustavo proved especially successful, for it gave a chance for the students to see some of their favorite teachers “trip the light fantastic.” On Wednesday, Ripal Patel led the students in games of “pass the parcel” and “liar’s club.” According to Ripal, “ It was wonderful to see so many of the students come together to enjoy the fruits of her culture. And it was also really awesome fun.” Finally, the Campus was treated to events focused on understanding the culture of Liberia led Kommy Johnson and Suwah Waitieh-Kabehl.
The week was so successful that the Diversity Club has already started planning next year’s Unity Week and may incorporate monthly events focused on international awareness. The Diversity Club would like to thank everyone that was involved including the excellent DJ skills of Darrell Brock and Sunrut Patel (Sunny). We would also like to give a special thank you to Dean Regan Hicks-Goldstein for her support.
