Course Descriptions


What classes will I take?

Construction Project Administration prepares the student to use procedures and techniques involved in controlling, coordinating, and managing the construction project processes.

Construction Blueprint Reading covers the fundamentals of reading and interpreting residential and light commercial building construction drawings. Reading drawings for structural information, reading detail drawings and plot plans, and reading blueprints for trade information will also be covered.

Architectural Drafting & Design presents basic architectural technology and drafting techniques through the drawing of plans, elevations, sections, details and schedules, as used in residential construction documents.

Construction, Materials & Methods covers construction, materials, and methods of use as they relate to the overall building industry, with major emphasis on the areas of soils, concrete, brick, masonry, steel, non-ferrous metals, timber and plastics.

Cost Estimating & Planning includes the preparation of material lists and take-off quantities of materials and labor costs from plans, working drawings, and specifications.

Advanced Cost Estimating & Planning continues with cost estimating and planning. Advanced topics will include heavy and commercial estimating and fundamentals of value engineering. Students will prepare construction estimates for a field project.

Contracts & Specifications studies the interpretation and preparation of specifications and other contract documents.

Project Scheduling & Accounting includes topics of job organization and coordination of subcontractors, long- and short-range scheduling, basic CPM scheduling techniques, materials management and shortages, and meeting schedules and cost estimates.

Computer Applications for Construction is an introduction to the use of microcomputer for construction applications. Construction estimating and project management software will be used and evaluated in the course.

Surveying Principles teaches theory and practice of plane surveying including the use of tapes, levels, transits and theodolites.

Introduction to CAD using AutoCAD presents an introduction to the basic elements of computer-aided drafting.

Project-Based Accounting provides a sound, thorough overview of accounting information emphasizing interpretation of accounting figures.

Human Resource Management covers personnel policies, interviewing and testing, selection and employment, training, benefits, employee-employer relations, affirmative action, and labor-management relations.
