Obtaining Sponsorship
By the end of their second semester, students (full-time) must secure a sponsor willing to hire them for the required two sessions of cooperative work experience and full-time employment upon graduation. The final responsibility for obtaining a sponsor lies with you. You cannot graduate without completing the required cooperative work experience.
Testing
Make sure you are scheduled to take the College's computerized placement test (CPT). The Admissions Office will schedule you for the placement test. Each applicant must have test results on file to be considered for acceptance into the Delaware Tech Automotive program.
College Interview
Upon compiling your test results the College will contact you and set up an appointment to discuss the results in a confidential one-on-one interview. At that time all students will learn the results of their testing and how the results apply to their future in the Automotive Program. Those applicants satisfying test standards will be directed to contact their sponsor or scheduled to interview with a potential sponsor. The candidates not meeting test standards will be advised to take prerequisite courses to improve their skills or re-evaluate their career goals.
The Interview Process
The non-sponsored applicant must go through the sponsor interview process. At any time during the application process, however, a non-sponsored candidate may obtain sponsorship and have their evaluation form signed and filed with the department. This is a job interview and you must convince the employer that you would be a good employee. During the cooperative training you are an employee of the facility and will receive an hourly wage. Remember, the facility wants the best employees working in their shop.
Some interview hints:
- Be on time! Be punctual! The dealer is looking for reliability - someone he can count on.
- Be enthusiastic!! Any businessperson wants enthusiastic and highly motivated employees working for them.
- Be neat and well groomed (clean, hair combed, clothes neat, deodorant, fresh breath, etc.) Neatness is always a positive characteristic.
- Be honest! Develop an air of trust between you and the interviewer by being honest. Don't give misleading information, it will only work against you. Trustworthiness is another characteristic desired by all employers.
- Bring any additional documentation supporting you as a successful student and employee (diploma, certificates, awards, etc.).
Tools
Once you are ready for the program to begin you must purchase (or already own) the prescribed basic tool set listed in your application packet. You may purchase any brand of tools you like. Before buying any tools we recommend that you talk with the College or sponsoring dealer about possible discount prices on name brand products. The investment is for your life's work. Make sure you have considered all the alternatives. Click Here for a list of tools you will need.
