Making Connections Dinner 2011
In February 2011 the Biology and Chemistry Department hosted the 4th Annual Making Connections Dinner. Students had the opportunity to share their resumes with representatives from local industries and colleges, learn about opportunities in the field and practice their networking skills.
Second Annual Battle of the Technologies
On November 10, 2010 Delaware Tech held the Second Annual Battle of the Technologies. Students were able to learn about a variety of careers in fields related to science and technology by playing games, answering trivia questions, and talking with professionals. Congratulations to the Health Career Studies students for accumulating the most points and winning the “Battle” this year!
Site Smart Grant
The Stanton Campus was recently awarded a National Science Foundation Site Smart Grant entitled "Serving Industry through Education: Student Mentoring and Research Techniques". The grant provides approximately $290,000 per year for the next three years to provide support for undergraduate research & faculty mentors at DTCC. The grant will also expand research methodology curriculum and support partnerships with local high schools by training secondary school educators in research methodology.
Congratulations to Dr. Virginia Balke for receiving this grant!
The Stanton/Wilmington Campus was recently awarded a $785,494 NSF grant entitled Energizing STEM Education. The grant will be directed by Mary Marchegiano, Maurizio Bianchi, and Robert Weis, and it will last for three years beginning in June 2010. This grant will teach Delaware Tech students and community members about wind, solar, and biofuel renewable energy technologies and environmental sustainability. The project has two goals. The first is to incorporate renewable energy topics into existing Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology, Chemistry Technology, Biotechnology and Chemical Process Operator Technology programs. The second is to provide outreach activities to the College and local community in the form of workshops, camps, middle and high school student enrichment activities and teacher internships. The addition of sustainability and renewable energy topics into new and existing courses will address the need for development of a workforce ready for new green industries. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to Sunrut Patel (Stanton Campus) and Juliana Letterie (Georgetown Campus) for being selected to participate in the Microbiome of Rice Project. These two students will join several other Delaware students in California this summer to work with Harsh Bais (Assistant Professor of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Delaware) and his colleagues at the University of California, Davis on the project.
In March 2010 students in CHM151 participated in a networking breakfast sponsored by the American Chemical Society Equipping the 2015 Chemical Technology Workforce Grant. The event was attended by Delaware Tech graduates who shared their personal experiences with education, networking, leadership, internships, and employment with current students.
There was a great deal of positive feedback regarding the breakfast from both current and past students. One of our graduates stated, "Thank you so much for inviting me to the Group Theory and Bonding Breakfast. I had such a great time talking and interacting with the Chemistry and Biotechnology students. It really felt good bonding and networking with them especially knowing that I was once in their shoes... I am definitely glad to be a part of it and I'm looking forward to many more such events... I'm proud of the effort you... are making in trying to bridge the gap between the students and the outside world. Once again, I want to thank... the Biology/Chemistry department for organizing such an incredible event."
Making Connections Dinner
In February 2010 the Biology and Chemistry Department sponsored the 3rd Annual Making Connections Dinner. The primary goal of the dinner meeting was to allow local industry representatives to meet with recent and potential graduates of the Biotechnology and Chemistry Technology programs to exchange information related to the actual activities and job performance requirements in their fields. Making Connections was a terrific networking event and chance for our students to learn more about the field and the opportunities available to them for both now and in the future.
Delaware Governors' Biotechnology Scholarship Fund
The Delaware Governors' Biotechnology Scholarship Fund was started in 2006 by the Fraunhofer Center for Molecular Biotechnology. The scholarship is awarded each year to a student from the University of Delaware, Delaware State University and Delaware Technical and Community College with the purpose of encouraging students in Delaware to consider studies and career opportunities in the field of biotechnology. Each student who is honored with the award is one who has shown a strong "commitment to pursuing the highest standards of excellence, ethics and compassion in the biotech field."
