Computer Engineering Technology

The Computer Engineering Technology Option is designed to prepare graduates for career positions as computer technicians, computer specialists, technical support specialists, field service engineers, customer service engineers, or computer network technicians. A career in this field may lead you to training computer users how to use new computer hardware and software, writing computer training manuals or overseeing the daily performance of computer systems. You could also be involved in troubleshooting problems and providing technical support for hardware, software, and systems or helping to design, install or support an organization's local-area network (LAN), wide-area network (WAN), network segment, or intranet system.

Graduates offer their employers an immediate contribution as team players equipped with a combination of technical knowledge, problem-solving experience and communication skills. Courses in the program include a strong component of practical applications, hands-on laboratory experience and basic theoretical concepts. Studies focus on electrical, electronic and digital circuits, microprocessors, programming, computer hardware, operating systems, and networks.

Program Objectives

The objectives are developed through a combination of the program's mission and the larger vision of the College's mission.

Objectives:

Two or more years after graduation from Delaware Technical Community College, students in the Electronics and Computer Technology - Computer Engineering Technology program will be able to:

  1. Perform the duties of an entry level computer engineering technician in almost all facets of the computer software and hardware industry.
  2. Continue their education either in engineering technology or in engineering
  3. Have the related skills necessary to advance in their chosen profession.

Program Outcomes

The Department works closely with the Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology Industrial Advisory Committee, which consist of members from local industries, to develop and periodically review the list of expectations of what students should master by the time of graduation. The competencies include technical, professional and contemporary outcomes allowing graduates the ability to adapt to future needs of local industries and continue their educational growth in either an academic or professional setting.

Listed below are the graduate competencies, or outcomes of the program.

  5. Apply appropriate information literacy skills to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively.
  6. Use computer technology appropriate to the field.
  7. Use scientific and mathematical reasoning appropriate to the technology.

Program Specific Competencies

  1. Perform the duties of an entry-level technician using the skills, modern tools, theory, and techniques of the computer engineering technology.
  2. Design or improve computer/electronics systems using critical thinking, theoretical knowledge, and practical understanding.
  3. Conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments using analysis tools and troubleshooting methods.
  4. Demonstrate basic management, organizational, and leadership skills.
  5. Recognize the need for lifelong learning.
