Twice a year, once each in the fall and spring semesters, the Math Department participates in the AMATYC Student Math League contest.
Scores from the two sittings are combined to determine our winners as well as the top scores being reported to the national office (individual and team scores). AMATYC stands for the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. It is the national organization for those who are teaching, or interested in the teaching of, people at the first two years of post-secondary education.
The contest is a national contest with monetary awards at both the national and local level. At the national level, individual and team awards are given out during the national conference held every November. We are in the Mid-Atlantic region (DE, NJ, MD, PA, VA, WV, DC). On our campus, the top three winners currently receive awards of $50 (3rd), $75 (2nd) and $100 (1st) given out at an awards luncheon held in May. All students in a 100- or 200-level course are encouraged to participate in the contest, with some instructors awarding extra credit points for participation! |
