Delaware Technical & Community College offers an intensive program of English as a Second Language which can lead directly into an Associate Degree Program at one of the four campus locations within the state of Delaware. Students whose only goal is the improvement of English skills can also benefit from the program.
Support for Learners
Entering students work with a college counselor as they are placed into the correct level of ESL and plan their studies. After enrolling, they work with an academic advisor, a member of the ESL faculty, who can continue directing them toward their goals. Career counseling is also available.
The Department of Language and Culture operates a Language Lab where students can use computers to further practice grammar and writing, reading, or pronunciation skills. Video and audiotapes are used as well as CD-ROMS.
The small class size, 15-18 maximum, facilitates better instructor-student communication as well as promoting interaction among students as they communicate in their new language. A variety of methods are used in class: individual learning, paired-practice, and small group work. Video as well as audio materials are used. Tutoring is also available outside class hours. One course, ESL 044, Advanced ESL Writing, is offered on-line as well as in a traditional classroom format.
For students who work full-time during the day and prefer to study English part-time or in the evenings, evening ESL courses are offered in grammar, reading, and writing. Each course is extended over two semesters so that it can be taken in a more convenient part-time format.
Students of English as a Second Language have the same privileges as students in any other program at the College. Therefore, campus facilities such as the Wellness Center are available to them. Students may participate in any student organization, including varsity sports, facilitating their contact with American students.
Entering a Degree Program
Students who wish to pursue a degree take ESL for Degree Programs, a course which prepares them for higher education here in the United States, whether at Delaware Tech or another institution. Students in this course can take approved entry-level courses from one of the Delaware Tech programs. They may also begin or continue their study of mathematics, often started while they were enrolled in the advanced level of the certificate program. Learners’ success is promoted by a careful combination of English, note taking and study skills development while learning content in their chosen field.
