SPA 133 - Using Beginning Spanish I
This beginning level language course introduces students to the Spanish language, its pronunciation, simple grammatical structures, and vocabulary. Emphasis is on oral, grammatical and writing skills to support communication.

COLLEGEWIDE CORE COURSE PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
The student will be able to:
1. Recognize and produce the basic sounds, language patterns of the Spanish language. (CCC 1)
2. Engage in basic exchanges of information in Spanish, particularly those most likely to occur in social service settings (CCC 1,3)
3. Demonstrate an awareness of some practices and perspectives of Hispanic cultures. (CCC 3, 4, 8)
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Students will demonstrate proficiency on all measurable performance objectives at least to the 75% level. The students will take 3 tests, one quiz and will be required to have one individual oral interview with the instructor.

SPA 134 - Using Beginning Spanish II
The continuation of SPA 133, Using Beginning Spanish I, this beginning level language course continues students’ study of the Spanish language, its pronunciation, simple grammatical structures, and vocabulary. Emphasis is on oral and aural communication. Grammatical and writing skills to support communication are also developed. The prerequisite for this course is SPA 133.

SPA 136 - Spanish Communication I
This course introduces students to the Spanish language through communicative interaction. Students will first develop listening and reading comprehension skills, then the expressive skills of speaking and writing. They will acquire basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary necessary for daily communication. The students will increase their awareness of Hispanic cultures.
General Information: Spanish Communication I (SPA 136) is a four credit course that meets for five credit hours per week. The credits for this class are transferable to the University of Delaware as SPAN 105 for the Delaware Tech Connected Degree Program and Associate of Arts Program.

1. Engage in simple conversations in Spanish, asking and answering questions on familiar topics such as family, school or their own life/routines. (CCC 1, 3)
2. Understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish on topics appropriate to beginning level learners: simple advertisements, commercials, conversations about familiar topics, and short readings, for example, magazines, newspapers, and the web. (CCC 1, 3)
3. Present information, concepts or ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on familiar topics. (CCC 1)
4. Utilize the CD-ROM and on-line components of the textbook to develop reading and listening skills. (CCC 6)
5. Demonstrate an awareness of the practices and perspectives of Hispanic cultures. (CCC 3)

SPA 137 - Spanish Communication II
Students develop ability to describe events in the past and future. Coursework emphasizes the development of language skills which, allow students to communicate with native speakers.
Prerequisites: SPA 136 Spanish Communication I

3. Present information, concepts or ideas to listeners or readers on topics which reflect their ability to communicate on topics additional to those describing their own immediate interests. (CCC 1)
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the practices and perspectives of Hispanic cultures. (CCC 3)

SPA 138 - Spanish Communication III
Students strengthen ability to describe present, past, and future events. Complex language structures are introduced. Development of listening comprehension skills is a major focus of the course.
