FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I transfer this course to another institution?
Spanish Communication I is a four credit course that meets for five credit hours per week. The credits for this class are transferable to the University of Delaware as SPAN 105 for the Delaware Tech Connected Degree Program and Associate of Arts Program. For transfer possibilities to other Delaware intstitutions of higher learning, please consult the Transfer of Credit Matrix: http://www.central.dtcc.edu/matrix/

I've had experience or prior instruction in Spanish. Which class do I need?
After being admitted, students should call 830-5252 to make an appointment for individualized placement.

I've had NO experience or prior instruction in Spanish. Which class do I need?
Spanish Communication I is designed for students who already possess a rudimentary knowledge of the Spanish Language. If the students have never taken a Spanish course before, it is suggested that they begin with SPA 133 Using Beginning Spanish before taking SPA 136.

What factors will contribute to my success in learning Spanish?
Using your new language is a must. You cannot really know a second language by merely being a spectator. There is no "cramming" in language acquisition. Constant practice is needed. In addition to attending class and participating, students are directed toward events in which they can interact with the Hispanic community. There are also many opportunities for Delaware Tech students to expose themselves to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities from the beginning of their study of Spanish.

How does my attendance affect my grade?
Attendance is very important in a language course because skills are developed through frequent use. You are expected to attend EVERY class. If you are frequently absent, it will be very difficult for you to master the concepts and abilities that are needed to meet the performance objectives, and therefore pass the course. Any student that misses more than 20% of the classes in one semester will receive an R and will have to repeat Spanish Communication I. You will sign a form stating that you accept this policy.

Do I need to take the College Placement Test if I only want a few courses?
Students who wish to take more than 11 credits must take the College Placement Test administered by the Admissions Office (571-5343).

I already have a college degree. What are the requirements for me?
The Delaware Tech admissions office needs an official transcript (sent directly from your prior college). You will then be exempt from the College Placement Test. You will not need to take RDG 120, Critical Reading and Thinking and ENG 121, Composition. Your transcript will also be evaluated course by course by the Dean of Instruction's Office and appropriate department chairpersons. It is necessary to declare a technology (major) before a valid evaluation can be done. Please allow sufficient time for this process.

I have some college credit but not a degree. What should I do?
Credit 10 years old is not accepted. Otherwise, submit an official transcript to Admissions.

Why do some people need to take more courses than others?
The placement scores you make determine which courses you need to take. For example, some students need to review English grammar or writing and will be supported in doing that by appropriate English classes. Other students may need to review math fundamentals in order to be considered eligible for any type of college degree.
