Associate of Arts Degree in Teaching
Mathematics Secondary Education

Do you want to teach math to middle or high school students? If you do, you would be entering a critical need teaching field where the demand far exceeds the supply.

From the national to the local level, the demand for math and science teachers is being heard. In his 2006 State of the Union address, President Bush called for adding 70,000 new math and science teachers. Delaware’s Governor, Ruth Ann Minner began addressing the math teacher shortage in 2004 with Teacher Corps Scholarships.

In the September 2005, Delaware Teacher Supply Survey Analysis (University of Delaware College of Human Service, Education & Public Policy) stated the following about Delaware teacher recruitment:

"In summary, as in past years, high-school math, special education, technology and high school science positions were difficult to fill......More districts reported major difficulties in all areas this year (2005) than in previous years."

Make a difference...touch a life...teach math.

Scholarships

Governor Minner addressed the critical shortage of math teachers by funding the Delaware Teacher Corps.

“The Delaware Teacher Corps was one of my key education initiatives this year [FY05],” Governor Ruth Ann Minner said. “This program will help us to recruit and grow our own best and brightest teachers while targeting specific needs within our schools.”

The program provides a service-repayment loan, or “loan forgiveness,” of up to $5,000 yearly to full-time students at a Delaware college or university[including Delaware Technical & Community College] who are enrolled in an academic program leading to teacher certification in a critical need area. First preference will be given to students who intend to teach middle and high school mathematics or science. Connected Degree Sheet

The College has established program-to-program articulation agreements that connect Delaware Tech associate degree programs with baccalaureate programs to create smooth transfer opportunities. The Connected Degree programs offer clear and economical pathways to high quality educational attainment. The articulation agreements enable a graduate to transfer to the senior institution as a junior, provided the required courses have been completed and the appropriate CUM GPA has been achieved as required by the receiving institution. The student must apply to the senior institution and complete all required admission processes.

The Connected Degree Sheets for the Associate of Arts Degree in Teaching Mathematics Secondary Education lists information about the courses required at Delaware Tech and a four year college for associate-bachelor's completion. At present Delaware Tech has connected degrees with University of Delaware and Delaware State University.

Students should see their Tech academic advisor for detailed information about these articulation agreements
