Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paraeducator Program

Do you like to help children, but do not want the responsibilities of a classroom teacher? Then, this program may be the right choice for you.

Have you thought about becoming a highly qualified paraeducator? The No Child Left Behind Act (NCBL) had far reaching effects. One effect centers on the need for a highly qualified paraprofessional (i.e. teacher's assistant, instructional assistant, paraeducator) in every classroom.

The actual regulations of the law state that every paraeducator who provides instructional support in a Title 1 classroom and who was hired after January 2002 must:

1. complete two years of study at a higher education institution OR

2. obtain an associate's (or higher) degree OR

3. able to demonstrate through a formal state or local academic test of the knowledge of and the ability to assist in reading, writing and mathematics. The test is the ParaPro and more information can be found at ParaPro Test Site

The Paraeducator Associate Degree program reflects the competencies required of a paraeducator as established by a core group of representatives from the Delaware Department of Education (DOE), Delaware State Education Association (DSEA), and Delaware school districts. This core group served much like a DACUM (Developing A Curriculum) committee in determining the skills and knowledge required of a paraeducator.
