NLN Pre-Admission Exam FAQs

NLN Pre-Admission PN & RN examinations are used to assess what you have learned to date. The Terry Campus Nursing Department requires each student to sit for these examinations as part of the admissions criteria for the practical nursing and registered nursing programs.

What do the examinations consist of?

Both examinations consist of three sections of multiple choice questions. Each question has only one answer. There is no penalty for guessing, but no credit will be given for any question for which you mark more than one answer. Please allow a total of 4 hours to complete the exam.

- Verbal skills and reading comprehension – assesses word knowledge through sentence completion and reading comprehension.

- Mathematics – assesses arithmetic (integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages) and basic algebraic and geometric skills.

- Science – assesses knowledge of general science, biology, human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and physics.

What are the accepted forms of payment for the NLN Pre-Admission Exam?

Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card.

Can I  take both the PN and RN versions of the NLN Pre-Admission Exam in the same academic year?

NO. You cannot take both the PN and RN exams in the same academic year. You can take only the exam for the program for which you have applied, and you will be permitted to take the exam only one time during the academic year.

What is the refund policy if I cannot sit for the test after I have registered for a specific date?

Due to new NLN testing policies, the Terry Campus Assessment/Career Center will not be able to issue refunds or transfer funds to other test dates after the test registration is closed.

What can I do to prepare for the examinations?

The National League for Nursing authors review guides for both the RN and PN Pre-Entrance Exams. These books are published by Jones and Bartlett and are available in the Terry Campus Bookstore. The titles of these test preparation manuals are: Review Guide for the LPN/LVN Pre-Entrance Exam and Review Guide for the RN Pre-Entrance Exam. The manuals may also be ordered from the publisher through the Internet @ www.jbpub.com. The list price is $24.95.

One copy of each of these test prep books is available for review in the Terry Campus Library and in the Assessment/Career Center.

Please note: The NLN is no longer publishing Pre-Admission Practice Tests, so we are no longer able to distribute these sample tests to students.

How long do the examinations take?

Each exam consists of three, 60-minute sections. Allow about 4 hours to complete the exam.
