  About the Green Room

The Green Room is set up to provide the most effective learning environment for toddlers. The area is fashioned to give toddlers an opportunity to learn through play. All the toys and materials used in the classroom help facilitate the necessary skills toddlers acquire in their individual development.

All the toys and materials used in the classroom are selected with certain criteria in mind. Is the item age and developmentally appropriate? Will the item allow the toddler freedom to express their individual creativity and imagination? Will the item promote the emerging developmental skills of a toddler? Will the item spike the curiosity and spontaneity of the toddler?

When planning lessons for the classroom we take in to consideration the guidelines set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Delaware Licensing, and the Creative Curriculum. These sources help the teacher to plan developmentally appropriate activities for the classroom. The activities introduce social skills such as taking turns, using early sign language, using manners, and expressing feelings. Pre-math skills are also learned through identifying shapes, counting and comparing sizes of items. Pre-reading and writing skills are learned through reciting the alphabet, being read to, encouragement of having toddlers read to themselves, rhyming, singing silly songs, modeling language, pronouncing name of items and providing materials to demonstrate early writing skills. The toddlers also practice their motor skills by playing games, jumping, taking walks, coloring and practicing with scissors. We strive to make learning fun!
