The English/Reading Department at the Terry Campus offers 4 courses in the distance learning format: ENG 121 Composition and ENG 122 Technical Writing are presented as telecourses and RDG 120 Critical Reading and Thinking and ENG 160 Business Communication are offered as online courses. All courses are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters except for ENG 160 which is offered only in the spring semester. The two telecourses require students to view videos either by watching them on a Comcast television station or renting them from the bookstore. The videos provide the instruction the student needs to be successful in the class. A packet with course information is given to the student when he/she purchases the text at the bookstore. This packet provides instructor information, hand-outs, and due dates for written assignments. Please note that all students in both telecourses will be required to come to the Terry Campus at least one time to do an oral presentation of one of their assignments. Students who have strong writing skills and who are disciplined and self-directed learners do well in a telecourse.

. RDG 120 and ENG 160 are presented entirely online using Blackboard. No campus visits are required for RDG 120 but at least one visit is required for ENG 160. A packet of information is also available at the bookstore for each course and contains valuable hand-outs to ensure success in these courses. Before registering, students should check the technical requirements on their computers to be sure they meet the minimum levels. Strong computer skills are a plus since all assignments and communication take place by email and by sending attachments. The college requires you to use your college email account for communication with your instructor.
Distance education courses provide many benefits for students such as flexible scheduling and working at home at a time that suits the student’s needs. However, distance education courses are not for everyone. Keep in mind that strong reading and writing skills as well as the ability to learn independently are the best combination to ensure success in this learning mode.
