English as a Second Language
Student
The English as a Second Language classes at the Terry Campus are designed to help students seeking a degree at Delaware Tech improve their reading and writing skills. In this way, they can continue with credit classes in their technology area. Students whose native language is not English take the Levels of English Proficiency (LOEP) portion of the College Placement Test when they apply to Delaware Tech. Their scores in the Sentence Meaning, Language Usage, and Reading subtests place them in one of three levels of classes: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. There are four courses at each level: Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Listening and Speaking. Students take the appropriate courses at the level indicated on the LOEP Test. Classes are small - fifteen or fewer and the emphasis is on mastery of skills, communicating of ideas, and interacting with other students. When students complete the Advanced level of ESL classes, ESL 100 for Degree Programs is an eight credit class that combines both reading and writing objectives to prepare students for ENG 121 Composition.
