As a drug and alcohol counselor, you'll work to prevent drug and alcohol abuse, and you'll deliver treatment to people who have encountered the devastion that drugs and alcohol abuse causes. You'll use your specialized knowledge of the complexities of this problem to help individuals and families back on the road to a healthy existence. Physiological, psychological, and societal concepts and theories will be the tools of the trade. Your efforts will have a positive impact on many people's lives, and you'll be helping society battle the epidemic of substance abuse. Drug and Alcohol Counseling Mission Statement
  • The mission of the Drug and Alcohol Counseling curriculum is to train students in various theories and techniques which are unique to drug and alcohol counseling.  This program will prepare students for entry into the drug and alcohol counseling profession and/or to continue their education at a four-year institution to complete a bachelor's degree.  The Drug and Alcohol Counseling courses are accepted by the Delaware Certification Board and lead to partial fulfillment of the requirements for certification.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling

You can enroll in the Drug and Alcohol Counseling Technology program on either a full-time or part-time basis. The length of thie required to complete an Associate Degree depends on the number of courses you take each semester. Some students may need refresher courses at the basic or pre-tech level; others may receive transfer credit or credit for work experience. Delaware Tech operates on a semester system with new sessions beginning in late August and mid-January, plus summer sessions beginning at the end of May and in mid-June. You can start taking courses any semester or summer session; however, all technical couses may not be offered every session.

Required Technical Courses

Intro to Drug and Alcohol Counseling I introduces the physiological, psychological, and sociological impact of drug and alcohol abuse and presents various models of addiction with an emphasis in the disease concept.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling II introduces a variety of treatment techniques unique to the field of drug and alcohol addiction and emphasizes learning through an experiemtial modality.

Directed Practice I in Drug and Alcohol places students in an agency to learn through supervised participation in the work of the agency.

Assessment/Treatment of Addiction is an overview of various types of addictions and the resulting characteristics and behavior patterns of the addicted individual.

Directed Practice II in Drug and Alcohol places students in a drug and alcohol treatment agency to learn supervised participation in working with addicted individuals.

Families and Addiction examines the impact of drug and alcohol on the family.  The focus will be on reviewing models of family dysfunctiona and on methods of treating the addicted family.

Getting Started

  1. Obtain an admission application by calling (302) 857-1020. Complete and return to the Terry Campus with a $10 fee.
  2. Take the College Placement Test (CPT) unless college-level math, reading, and English courses have been completed with a "C" or better. The CPT will determine appropriate placement and is scheduled by the Admissions Office.
  3. Request that high school and/or college transcripts be sent to the Admissions Office
  4. Meet with a Delaware Tech counselor to discuss CPT results.
  5. Meet with advisor to plan schedule.
  6. Apply and register early for best selection of courses.
