The Human Services Technology provides you with comprehensive training in the human services field. You will aquire skills and experience to work with both individuals and groups. You will find this program valuable if you want to plan and work with community services programs, provide individual and group counseling services, develop human relations skills to work with individuals from diversified backgrounds, or work with many government agencies or private firms that require personal and human relations skills

Human Services Mission Statement
  • The mission of the Human Services Program is to provide students with the educational foundation, which will allow them to successfully gain entry-level employment within the human services arena and/or succeed in continuing their education at a baccalaureate level beyond graduation.  The curriculum and individual courses consist of a balance between providing students with a strong theoretical and content foundation as well as an experiential, skill development component in order to prepare students to continue their education and/or allow them to interface competently and ethically with clients and colleagues in a career setting.

Human Services

You can enroll in the Human Services Technology program on either a full time or part-time basis. The length of time required to complete an Associate Degree depends on the number of courses you take each semester. Some students may need refresher courses at the basic or pre-tech level; others may receive transfer credit or credit for work experience. Delaware Tech operates on a semester system with new sessions beginning in late August and mid-January, plus summer sessions beginning at the end of May and in mid-June. You can start taking courses any semester or summer session; however, all technical couses may not be offered every session. A Diploma is offered in this technology.

Required Technical Courses

Intro to Human Services introduces students to the field of Human Services. Also addressed are client needs and services as well as the skills and attitudes required of the effective human services worker.
Program Leadership discusses essential elements and principles involved in the development, organization, supervision, promotion and evaluation of various types of community programs.
Theories of Counseling in an overview of basic counseling theories and techniques in terms of the client-worker relationship.
Social Policy & Program Planning reviews the nature of social policy, its historical development, policy making, and planning process.
Dynamics & Group Communication I presents an overview of the theories, principles, and techniques of organization, leadership, and participation in the group process.
Interviewing & Counseling Skills is a continuation of Theories of Counseling. The course emphasizes the practical application of selected counseling theories.
Adult Development and Aging reviews physiolgical, cognitive, emotional, and social experiences and changes across the adult lifespan.
Directed Practice I places the student in an agency or organization to learn through supervised participation in the work of the agency.
Ethical Problems & Issues provides students with the tools needed to better clarify their own values as well as understand the basic moral problems and issues of society.

Getting Started

  1. Obtain an admission application by calling (302) 857-1020. Complete and return to the Terry Campus with a $10 fee.
  2. Take the College Placement Test (CPT) unless college-level math, reading, and English courses have been completed with a "C" or better. The CPT will determine appropriate placement and is scheduled by the Admissions Office.
  3. Request that high school and/or college transcripts be sent to the Admissions Office
  4. Meet with a Delaware Tech counselor to discuss CPT results.
  5. Meet with advisor to plan schedule.
  6. Apply and register early for best selection of courses.
