Sharon R. Alston-Middleton


Sharon R. Alston-MiddletonMrs. Middleton graduated in 1982 with an Associate Degree in Human Services. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Behavioral Science in 1985 from Wilmington College and a Masters in Social Work from Delaware State University in 1989. As a part of her graduate studies, she designed and implemented a career development/assessment program primarily targeted to military spouses. Mrs. Middleton was the Director of Family Readiness for the 512th Reserve Wing at the Dover Air force Base (DAFB). Prior to accepting this position, she was employed with the Family Support Center, DAFB in the Employment Resource Center as the Transition Assistance Program Manager. Mrs. Middleton served on the following committees for the DAFB: Health Consumer Advisory Panel, Health Promotions Working Group, Family Maltreatment Case Management Team, Family Day Care Panel, Community Action Information Board, and the Transition and Relocation Coordinating Committee.

Mrs. Middleton was very active at the Terry Campus and in the community. She was a member of the following organizations: American Counseling Association, Association of Counselors and Educators in Government, National Association of Employment and Development, American Association of University Women, American Society for Training and Development, Delaware State Training and Development Committee, and the Business, Industry and Education Alliance-Job Fair Committee. She served as a board member for the Delmarva Human Resource Group, Program Chair; Delaware Parents Association, Advisory Board Liaison; Kent County Cooperative Extension, Advisory Board; and was President of the Terry Campus Alumni Association. Mrs. Middleton also served as Field Instructor for Delaware State University's School of Social Work, was an Associate Professor for Wilmington College's Behavioral Science Department, and was Faculty Advisor for Wilmington College 's Behavioral/ Criminal Justice Student Organization.
Mrs. Middleton was recognized for her work with the Women in Transition Program at the Terry Campus and received the Senior Community Service Employment Award-Kent County Employer of the Year. She worked very hard to ensure the success of the Terry Campus Alumni Association.
Mrs. Middleton passed away in October of 2000. She is survived by her husband, Victor, and their son, Keenan Alston.

Ferman Franklin, Jr.


(1931 - 1977) Mr. Ferman Franklin, Jr.Mr. Franklin graduated in 1979 with an Associate Degree in Human Services Technology. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Science from Wilmington College in 1981 and a Master of Education with an emphasis on Counseling in 1987 from Salisbury State University. While employed at Delaware State University. Mr. Franklin won the admiration and respect of his co-workers. He was recognized and awarded the Employee of the Year in 1996 to acknowledge the outstanding services provided as: Professional Counselor, Coordinator of Veteran Affairs, Substance Abuse Specialist, Coordinator of Disabled Students, and member of the State Troubled Employee Program (STEP). He was employed at Delaware State University from 1989 to 1997. Mr. Franklin was a twenty-three year veteran of the Armed Forces; during his tenure with the military, he received many awards and citations for professional performance.
Mr. Franklin was dedicated to community involvement serving in various capacities for Women in Need (WIN), Thresholds Inc. Advisory Board, and the Crisis Intervention Program. He was also associated with the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge No.28 of Dover. Mr. Franklin was very active with the Delaware Drinking Driver Program. He helped design and implement an alcoholism screening and referral unit for the criminal justice system in Kent County. The State of Delaware Department of Health and Social Services division of Mental Health Bureau of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse recognized Mr. Franklin for his service to the people and to the professional community of Kent County during his years with the Bureau.
In his role as Senior Counselor, Mr. Franklin provided support to welfare clients who participated in the First Step Program at the Terry Campus. The success of that program can largely be attributed to Mr. Franklin's dedication to the clients he served. Mr. Franklin exemplified the core of the counseling profession by always going the extra mile for his students. His quiet demeanor and warm, caring attitude won the trust and respect of his clients.
His loving and dedicated wife, Esther, who lives in Dover, and his two children, Teresa, of Milford, DE, and Maurice, who currently resides in Sacramento, CA, survive Mr. Franklin.


Linda C. Goodnight

Ms. Linda C. GoodnightMs. Goodnight graduated in 1992 with an Associate Degree in Human Services and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wilmington College in 1996. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Social Work from Delaware State University. Ms. Goodnight is employed with Genesis Care - Silver Lake Center as a social worker. A few of her responsibilities include service on the Resident Council, Family Council, the Guardian Angel Program as well as facilitation of the Behavior Committee while maintaining a 120 resident caseload. While employed as Independent Living Skills Supervisor for Easter Seals, The State Independent Living Council recognized Ms. Goodnight as employee of the year in 1995. She was instrumental in promoting the philosophy of community inclusion military, with disabilities.
Ms. Goodnight is currently a member of the Governor’s Fall Festival Committee, Business Professional Women, American Counseling Association, and the Village Crier through the Office of Prevention. In addition, she serves on the Advisory Board for the Human Services Department at the Terry Campus, co-chair for the Terry Campus Alumni Professional Day Committee, Board of Directors for the National Head Injury Foundation, Board of Directors for American Red Cross, and past Board of Directors for the National Kidney Foundation.
Ms. Goodnight is very active in many fundraising projects and special events such as the Delaware and National Kidney Foundation for Kent County. She received the volunteer of the year award from the YMCA. Ms. Goodnight also volunteers for the Office of Volunteerism for special events in Kent County and serves as a volunteer counselor for high-risk African-American children (Youth Guard). She also initiated and facilitated the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Support Group for Kent County.
Ms. Goodnight has been described as truly dedicated to her position as a social worker and always goes the extra mile to help others. She is a special person who makes a difference in people's lives. Ms. Goodnight is actively involved in helping those with disabilities and is a strong advocate for the elderly.
