Terry Campus Alumni Association has awarded their 2006-2007 scholarships to Debra Smith of Felton, Jamie Thomas of Dover, and Deborah Wheeler of Dover.

Debra Smith, a 2006 graduate of the Computer Informations Systems Department, is currently seeking a second degree in the Business Department with a concentration on Management Information Systems. She is an active member of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), president of the Computer Club, past treasurer of Student Support Services Club, and a new member of Alpha Beta Gamma (ABG) honor society.  After completing her degree at Terry Campus, she plans to continue her education at Wilmington College in Computer and Network Security. In Dr. Susan Looney’s recommendation letter, she stated that “Debbie is a well-balanced, committed individual who embraces her responsibilities with humor, grace, and hard work.”

Jamie Thomas is a Human Services student and a teacher’s aide in the Child Development Center.  He is actively involved with Student Services and Support Center and works as an instructor with Delaware Tech summer camps.  Jamie’s goal is to become the first college graduate in his family.  After graduation, Jamie hopes to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology.  According to Jamie, “I want to be happy about the job I have and the positive effect that I have on other’s lives.”

Deborah Wheeler is a student in the Human Services Department.  She is involved with Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, Human Services Organization, and the Human Services Honor Society.  Deborah is mentoring a fourteen-year-old girl through Creative Mentoring and visits a local nursing home on a weekly basis, in addition to other community activities.  Her educational goals are to complete her degree at the Terry Campus and continue on to Wilmington College for a degree in counseling.  Deborah’s long-term goal is to find a position working with troubled youth.

Terry Campus Alumni Association awards a scholarship each year with funds raised through the alumni phone-a-thon.  Selection for the scholarship is based on Campus and community service, grade point average, and need.

2005-2006

  • Crystal L. Harmon

Terry Campus awarded a second 2005-2006 scholarship to Crystal L. Harmon. is a nursing major pursuing a career as a registered nurse and eventually a nurse anesthetist.  A long-term goal is to open a birthing and health clinic to teach teenagers and adults about pregnancy, in addition to health and nutrition before, during, and after pregnancy.  Crystal is a member of the Student Support Services Club, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), and the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA).  She also was chosen to attend the Study Abroad in the Republic of Turkey last June.  She is currently employed as a financial aid technician at the Campus.  According to her co-worker, Maureen Wootten, Crystal is a multi-tasking specialist who does her job in such a way that students and staff are happy they had a question to ask!”  In addition to her responsibilities as a student, employee, wife, and mother, Crystal finds time to work with her church in various capacities. 

2005

Allison J. Polizzi is a student in the Business Department with a concentration on Marketing & Management.  Currently, Allison holds a 4.0 GPA.  She is an active member of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), Alpha Beta Gamma (ABG—business honor society), and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK—an international business honor society.  She plans to receive a bachelor’s degree in finance from Wilmington College in 2006, while at the same time finishing classes at Delaware Tech.  Her goal is to eventually become a CEO of a corporation.  According to Allison, she “would like to use and apply knowledge learned from instructors at Delaware Technical & Community College to influence people and help out those less fortunate.”

In Dr. Susan Looney’s recommendation letter, she stated that “Through classes, parenting, and extracurricular activities, Allison has demonstrated that she can fulfill a leadership position and academically excel.”

2004

The Terry Campus Alumni Association has awarded its 2004 scholarships to Sibyl Hoover of Dover and Stefanie Wooten of Magnolia.  Sibyl graduated with honors from the Business Department in 2004 and was very active in campus life.  She held numerous elected offices in both Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma honor societies, was state president for Phi Theta Kappa, and a member of the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Presentation Team. Sibyl works with the Delaware Association of Educational Office Professionals and the National Association of Educational Office Professionals.  This year she was installed as the Mid-Atlantic Area Director for the National Association.  She was the highest scoring student from Delaware in the USA Today – All Academic Team program and was ultimately named Delaware’s New Century Scholar for 2004.  Sibyl is continuing her education at Wilmington College. Stefanie is a first-year student pursuing an associate of applied science degree in criminal justice.  She is an honor student who maintains a place on the Dean’s List. While attending school full-time, Stefanie manages to hold two part-time jobs.  Stefanie expects to graduate in 2005 and plans to transfer to a four-year institution.  Her goal is to become a federal lawyer. 

2003

Terry Campus Alumni Association awarded their 2003 scholarships to Andrena M. Kardos and Barbara Valenkas, both of Dover. Andrena is a business accounting student who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She is an active member of the Business Professionals Society, International Association of Administrative Professionals, Students in Free Enterprise, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and a tutor for accounting and English students. Andrena plans to continue her education following graduation from Delaware Tech and has the career goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

Barbara is a student in the Human Services Technology. She has volunteered over 200 hours at the Modern Maturity Center Adult Day care, participated in the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen for over 2 ½ years, served as president of the Human Services Organization (HSO), vice president of the Student Support Services Club for two terms, and secretary/treasurer for the HSO. According to her instructor and distinguished alumna, Linda Goodnight, “Barbara has demonstrated leadership and a heart for helping people through her volunteerism in the community and her involvement in campus organizations.” Barbara hopes to graduate this fall with a dual degree in Human Services and Human Services—Gerontology.   • Alice Rhoades

Terry Campus Alumni Association has awarded their 2002 Association scholarship to Alice Rhoades of Hartly. Alice graduated in May with her second degree in business administration. This fall, she began pursuing a bachelor’s degree from Wilmington College. While at the Terry Campus, Alice has been an active supporter of the Alumni Association, was inducted into Alpha Beta Gamma business honor society, served as an executive board member with the Students in Free Enterprise, and contributed time and knowledge to numerous community events. According to her faculty advisor, Lauretta Cooper, Alice has demonstrated self-motivation, leadership skills, and an ability to work in a team environment with a diverse group of students.   • Kelly Hahn

The Terry Campus Alumni Association awarded the 2001 Association scholarship to Kelly Hahn of Smyrna. Kelly began studying at the Terry Campus in January. She is pursuing an associate degree in dental hygiene. Based on he academic accomplishments, Kelly was invited to join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) international honor society.
