Upward Bound Alumni Inspire Youth at Annual Celebration

DOVER - Delaware Tech’s Upward Bound program held its annual TRIO Day Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 23. Nine Upward Bound alumni came back for this year’s TRIO Day to share their experiences and offer tips and advice to current Upward Bound students and parents.

Upward Bound is one of the programs under “TRIO,” an initiative that was begun as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. Its focus is on preparing first generation, low-income students for college. Part of this preparation is a community service project. As part of their project, this year’s Upward Bound students collected more than 500 toiletry items to be donated to a local shelter.

The Upward Bound Appreciation Celebration is an annual event to thank the community for its support of this vital program, which has helped students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education for more than 40 years.
