Ray Parker Joins Terry Campus Cross Country Coaching Staff

DOVER - “Delaware Tech has a women’s cross country team? I didn’t know that!” Unfortunately, this type of comment was heard over-and-over by the coaching staff at the Terry Campus. They had runners with lots of passion for cross country and they had a desire to take their team from the “club” level to the college level.

Enter Ray Parker – known by some as the owner of Tri-sports Events, and by others as Coach Parker from St. Thomas More, or maybe Lake Forest High – he has been a well-known personality in Kent County athletics for many years. Parker is now head coach for Women’s Cross Country at Delaware Tech’s Terry Campus.

“We are so excited that we can bring a coach of his caliber to our institution,” said Athletic Director Anthony Edwards. “Parker is the type of coach that can make our program great going forward.”

“I know the coaches and the kids know me,” says Parker. He and his wife came to Delaware in 1987, after he retired from the U.S. Air Force. Besides his coaching and business entrepreneurship, Parker organized the Lake Forest Cross Country Festival for nine years, and was instrumental in growing participation from 400 to 1,900 students. He also sits on the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic association’s Cross Country Committee.

Parker looks forward to learning about Delaware Tech athletics from his experienced coaching team, whose combined knowledge will benefit the newest member of the team. Together with Assistant Coach Karin Ryndak and Assistant Coach Sonja Quinonez, Coach Parker will be getting out to the high schools and talking to student athletes about women’s cross country at Delaware Tech.

The Women’s Cross Country Fall 2013 Season Interest meeting will be held Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Center lounge. Call 857-1810 for more information.
