“People: Your Most Valuable Asset” to be the Theme for the 2013 Sussex County Today & Tomorrow Conference

GEORGETOWN – Community leaders, educators, businesspeople and elected officials will join together to raise public awareness regarding current economic issues at the 20th Anniversary Sussex County Today & Tomorrow Conference. The event will be hosted on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Carter Partnership Center at Delaware Technical Community College in Georgetown.

If the theme sounds familiar, that’s because it was the theme of the 19th annual conference, which was cancelled last fall due to Hurricane Sandy. As the county continues to grow, there are opportunities and challenges that affect each and every resident. Planners for this year’s conference decided to maintain the focus on employees as an organization’s most valuable resource.

Following welcoming remarks by Sussex County Council President Michael Vincent, Delaware Tech President Orlando J. George, Jr., and Vice President and Campus Director Ileana Smith, the morning will include a wealth of information important to Sussex County employers. The conference will include a 20-year retrospective of Sussex County Today & Tomorrow, remarks by Delaware Economic Development Office Secretary Alan B. Levin, a statistical update by Workforce Analyst Ed Simon of the Delaware Economic Development Office, and a keynote address by Laura McCann of Burris Logistics.

There will also be an hour reserved for Delaware Tech’s new 1 Million Cups initiative, a partnership effort with the Kauffman Foundation to support entrepreneurship nationwide, and two panel discussions. The first panel, World of Hiring and Development, will include Cindy Dunson of Dogfish Head, Cathy Ressler of Wawa, and Dan Schlabach of Atlantic Aluminum Products. The second panel, Job Seeker Preparation, will focus on preparing graduates for the workplace and on-the-job training.
