Delaware Tech Helps to Give Kids a Smile
STANTON/WILMINGTON - On Friday, February 7, 2014, Delaware Technical Community College’s Dental Health Center, located at the College’s Wilmington Campus, hosted Give Kids a Smile, a national program that provides free dental care to children from low-income families. Sponsored by the Delaware State Dental Society (DSDS), Give Kids a Smile is the American Dental Association’s major oral health outreach program. This is the 11th year that the event has been held at Delaware Tech.
Area dental professionals, along with Delaware Tech’s Dental Health Clinic staff, faculty, first year and second year dental hygiene students work diligently to meet the needs of the children who visit during the event. Nearly 100 volunteers provided dental treatment and education to dozens of children from the community.
Give Kids a Smile dental volunteers provide educational materials, screenings, and free dental care such as cleanings, X-rays and fillings. The Give Kids a Smile event takes place during February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month.
“Give Kids a Smile provides our students with excellent educational experiences and teaches them the importance of giving back. It is a wonderful event that we look forward to each year,” said Vivian Rizzo, chair of the dental hygiene program at Delaware Tech’s Stanton/Wilmington Campus. Delaware Tech dental hygiene students also participated in a Give Kids a Smile event at the La Red Health Center in Georgetown, Delaware on February 8.
