Governor Visits High School Manufacturing Program at Delaware Tech

STANTON – Governor Jack Markell paid a visit to Delaware Tech’s Innovation and Technology Center (ITC) on Tuesday, May 27, to tour a high school program aimed at training the next generation of Delaware manufacturing workers. Fifteen high school students from William Penn and Delcastle Technical High School are taking part in a pilot program in which they complete a 155-hour manufacturing certificate program, while completing their high school classes at the same time.

The students spent time each school day at the ITC, where they learned skills such as math, blueprint reading, safety skills, and basic electrical and mechanical fabrication. The students also took part in a manufacturing job fair, where they had the opportunity to practice interview skills, and secure jobs and internships. One such student, Ariel Pantoja, a junior at William Penn High School, will intern with Bloom Energy this summer.

Based on the success of the pilot, it is hoped that the program will expand in the fall to include more students and more schools.
