Human Services

Associate Degree Program

If you have a desire to build a rewarding career helping people who are experiencing personal and socialization problems, consider enrolling in the Human Services program at Delaware Tech. This comprehensive program provides practical information for counseling, understanding human behavior, and policy/program development, with internship opportunities that provide real work experience. Through the program, you’ll learn how to help people overcome obstacles in their lives by developing your interpersonal and intercultural communication skills. You’ll also acquire knowledge of important theories in counseling psychology and human development in order to serve individuals and groups experiencing needs related to poverty, abuse, neglect, mental illness, disability, crime, unemployment, illness, discrimination, divorce, aging, and family dysfunction. And you’ll play a vital role in linking people with services such as education or training, financial assistance, child care, shelter, addictions treatment, mental health services and senior services. As a graduate of the program, you’ll have the educational foundation to successfully gain entry level human services positions in both the private and public sectors.

This program is offered at the Dover, Georgetown, and Wilmington campuses.

In this program, you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare you for positions such as:

  • Case manager
  • Program director

What You Will Earn

Competitive starting salaries range from $17,000 - $28,000.

Program Graduate Competencies

The Program Graduate Competencies listed below identify the major learning goals related to your specific program of study and identify the knowledge and skills you will have when you graduate to be successful in your chosen field.

  1. Create and maintain effective and professional documents relevant to Human Services agencies.
  2. Interact ethically and professionally within the Human Services field.
  3. Apply information to identify client?s strengths, weaknesses, and resources to create a treatment plan.
  4. Provide effective client services at an entry level by utilizing professional Human Services principles and practices.
  5. Establish effective working relationships within the Human Services arena.
  6. Apply basic management and leadership skills in Human Services environments, including time management, organization, and the ability to follow directions.
  7. Utilize feedback to assess the effect of oneself on Human Services outcomes and make adjustments accordingly.

Core Curriculum Competencies

The Core Curriculum Competencies listed below identify what you will be able to do as a graduate, regardless of your program of study. You will acquire these core competencies through general education courses and program-specific coursework. You will be expected to use relevant technology to achieve these outcomes:

  3. Collaborate to achieve a common goal.
  4. Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct.
  5. Use information literacy for effective vocational and/or academic research.
  6. Apply quantitative reasoning and/or scientific inquiry to solve practical problems.

Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree?
