Graduate Turns Evening Class Option into Blueprint for Success
Michael Henry’s career has gone from running blueprints as a high school senior during construction of the Dover Mall to serving as site designer for the Delaware State University OSCAR Building, as well as that college’s student center and wellness center, the new Dover Public Library and rebuilt South Dover Elementary School.
Henry, an associate of Becker Morgan Group and a civil designer, has turned to Delaware Tech throughout his professional development and growth. He earned a mechanical drafting diploma in 1985, a surveying studies diploma in 1989 and an associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology in 1994 – all while working full time right out of high school in 1982.
“I kept going back and furthering my education because I wanted to do more,” Henry said. “Thankfully, the availability of Delaware Tech and the programs it offered in my career field allowed me to work full time during the day and attend classes at night.”
From his time on campus, Henry fondly recalls Dan Houghtaling, an advisor and instructor for many of the drafting, surveying and engineering classes.
“I spent many hours in Dan’s classes,” stated Henry. “And he helped me get to the point where, combining my work experience and my associate degree, I was able to obtain a position at Becker Morgan.”
Now approaching his 20-year anniversary at Becker Morgan and nearly 35 years in the field of civil engineering, Henry continues to give his thanks and appreciation to the College.
“Had it not been for Delaware Tech and the ability to attend night classes, I would not be where I am today,” Henry said.
With a light chuckle he added, “I’ve come a long way since first running all those blueprints.”
