Sophia Marx
Recent Grad Starts Her Nursing Career at Johns Hopkins
Anyone who has spent any time in the hospital just has to leave with an elevated opinion of nurses and all that they do. They see us at our worst, accept us for what we are, and encourage us to get well and keep our spirits up. 2016 Delaware Tech graduate Sophia Marx, recently began her nursing career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
At an early age, Marx was curious about operations and hospitals. She also volunteers at nursing homes, because she had the compassion and interest to help the elderly.
“For as long as I can remember, I always knew that I wanted to do something in the medical field,” Marx said. “Growing up with two older brothers also must have played a role in my interest because they were constantly coming home with bumps and bruises, cuts, and bloody noses. I was always right there to see what was going on and try to fix it, so I had the feeling deep down that I belonged in the medical profession.”
Nursing wasn’t the first career path Marx took. She originally started her education with the hopes of becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), but decided a hospital environment would better suit her. When she started as a nursing student she had some hesitation and doubts that she had picked the right career field, but those have long sense gone away.
“I still wasn’t sure if it would be the perfect career choice but it ended up being the best decision in my life thus far,” Marx said. “I could not imagine a better choice that I could have made for myself.”
Marx credits the education and training she received at Delaware Tech as one of the reasons she has been able to be successful in her field and start working at a prestigious hospital. However, she also had an inner fire to excel and succeed and become the best nurse she could be.
“Having a passion for nursing plays a crucial role in one’s patient care and productivity. If you are passionate about your job, you will do your best every day and the level of care you deliver to your patients will exceed the care received by those who are not passionate about nursing,” Marx said.
During her time at Delaware Tech, Marx also got to experience a Study Abroad trip to Cusco, Peru. While there, they got to see the healthcare system in Peru – which showed her the similarities and the differences as it related to our system.
“People there live well and happy in their normal lives, but this was hard for me to grasp at first because life there is so drastically different from where I come from and my way of life, but it was beautiful in its own way,” Marx said. “From the trip, I have gained confidence in myself. The healthcare setting was a culture shock for me. We really take our health care for granted in the U.S. We have very extensive and readily available resources, beautiful hospitals, plenty of rooms, staff, etc. In Cusco, they were using such small spaces to do the same things that we do and with very limited resources and staff.”
