Bob Sullivan
Paramedic Instructor
Bob Sullivan joined Delaware Tech as a full-time faculty member because he enjoyed teaching as an adjunct at the College and he wanted to help expand the paramedic program. As part of that expansion, Bob helped implement new national EMS education standards and added more simulation to the curriculum. Simulation in healthcare is a topic of high interest to Bob, who continues to learn about the advancements in simulation tools and the best ways to incorporate and utilize those tools in the paramedic curriculum. Off campus, Bob enjoys outdoor activities with his family, bicycling, and playing hockey. He also writes articles for EMS1.com and works as an EMT with the Five Points Fire Company.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech?
"There are so many ways to be creative here. I learn so much from the CCIT and EMS education courses and workshops that I get to try in my courses."
Q: Why was it important for you to work at Delaware Tech?
"I really enjoyed teaching here as an adjunct and doing continuing education projects, and when the position opened it just felt like the right thing to do. By joining Delaware Tech I got to be a part of the program expanding, adding more simulation to the curriculum, and implementing new national EMS education standards. It's also important that our paramedic program is offered with an associate degree – not all schools do."
Q: What did you do before working at Delaware Tech?
"I worked as a New Castle County Paramedic and as an adjunct at the College."
Q: Describe your first day at Delaware Tech. What was that experience like?
"I came in and was shown my office, which I had never had before. Then I sat in on a class and helped with lab. I remember feeling overwhelmed with all the technology, but that I had a lot of support."
Q: What changes have you seen in yourself since you started working here?
"I'm a lot more comfortable using technology, especially the simulators in the lab. When I started, I was afraid they would break if I touched them."
Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of the College?
"I enjoy outdoor activities with my family, bicycling, and playing hockey. I also write articles for EMS1.com and work as an EMT with the Five Points Fire Company."
Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Delaware Tech thus far?
"I've been bringing my kids to class when we cover pediatrics. This is the fourth year we've done it, and each class I notice how much older and bigger they have gotten. They love coming, and this year my 7-year-old really got into role-playing as a patient. It's something I will always remember."
Q: What's something people may not know about you?
"Growing up I followed ambulances and fire trucks around our neighborhood on my bicycle, and a friend and I put together a pretend ambulance, first-aid kits, and even a defibrillator with things around my house. It's actually pretty similar to what I do now at work."
Q: What are your future goals?
"I want to learn as much as I can about simulation in healthcare. There are so many more tools available for it now than they were even four years ago, and I want to get better at matching the tools we have with where the students are in the program."
