Mike McCloskey
Academic Counselor, Student Life
If you've been to the Stanton or George Campuses of Delaware Tech, then you've probably met Mike McCloskey. A fixture at every event, activity and special happening at the College, Mike pours his heart and soul into making sure that our students have an engaging and meaningful experience at the college. Mike is never too busy to talk to a student about his or her goals and find a way to help.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech?
"There are so many - working with Phi Theta Kappa, advising the Student Government Association, planning student events. I think it all comes down to watching students grow and develop. It is a privilege to see students develop life goals, make new friends, and achieve something that they never thought possible. Every day I go home knowing that I did something that will help a student make their life better. I am honored that students trust me to help plan their future and work with me to make student life at Delaware Tech more engaging."
Q: Why was it important for you to work at Delaware Tech?
"I have worked in higher education for over 18 years. Working at Delaware Tech is important for me because it supports the kind of student that I was in high school and the kind of people who, like my mom, go back to school in their 40s and 50s. I like that people in the community know that I work here. I get messages from friends asking me to chat about Delaware Tech, SEED, and the differences between here and programs at other schools. I have met with families over coffee on a weekend about the admissions and financial aid process and chatted with students I see at the gym about registering for classes."
Q: What changes have you seen in yourself since you started working here?
"The last five years have seemed like a lifetime. I have seen myself become more understanding of the differences each of our students bring to us. Each student has their own story that needs to be heard. Because of the committees I have been able to serve on, I have been able to further develop my event planning skills and leadership skills."
Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of the College?
"I am an avid Pez collector – with over 100 on display in my office and many hundreds more at home. I am also a fitness enthusiast and teach group exercise classes at the YMCA of Delaware. I enjoy cooking and making home cooked meals for my family. You will also catch me sporting a bowtie every Thursday during the academic year #bowtiethursday."
Q: What's something people may not know about you?
"I am proud to say that I am a first generation college student. Both my parents worked blue color jobs and made it their goal to see me and my brother graduate from college."
Q: Do you have any future goals?
I am applying to start a doctoral program at Wilmington University this fall. I am applying for the Organizational Leadership, Learning and Innovation program and I am planning to develop a concentration in Prevention Science.
