Meet the Faculty and Staff
Sonya Yoder
Sonya Yoder is an Early Childhood Curriculum Assistant who has worked at Delaware Tech since 2007. Before working at Delaware Tech, she was an Early Childhood Education student and graduated from that program. Outside of work she is very involved in her church, loves spending time with family and friends, and enjoys taking road trips and eating at new restaurants. Her future goals include completing her bachelor's degree at Wilmington University.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech?
"My absolute, no doubt about it, hands down favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech is the people. I have met so many amazing people in the years I have been here and have made so many friends; even some that have become like family."
Q: Why was it important for you to work at Delaware Tech?
"When I started doing my observation hours at the Child Development Center for my Early Childhood Education classes, I knew right away that I wanted to work there. When I was offered a job by Laurie Beauchamp (who remains one of the biggest influences in my life), I gave a whole hearted "YES!" and haven't regretted it once. I never wanted a job that just "paid the bills," but wanted one that gave me purpose. It has been such a blessing to be part of this "village." Being part of the lives of so many children and their families has brought so much joy and meaning to my life and I wouldn't trade it for the world."
Q: What changes have you seen in yourself since you started working here?
"I was basically a child when I started here and I was full of anxiety. I have done A LOT of growing and changing in my years spent working here. I have confidence in myself and a desire to keep growing and "spreading my wings." I have enjoyed being on several different committees on campus and interacting with the different departments. I have learned to use my voice and grow a strong backbone."
Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Delaware Tech thus far?
"I have a lot of wonderful memories from my time at Delaware Tech. One particular memory that sticks out in my mind is from when I was on a committee with Bobbi Barends, who at the time was still dean of instruction. I was contemplating making a change professionally, but doubting my abilities. I will never forget her calling me "a rock star." I thought, "Wow, if Bobbi Barends believes in me, I need to believe in myself!" That is how the Delaware Tech staff is. They are encouraging. They make you know and believe that you can do hard things and if you fall down, you will always have someone to help you get back on your feet."
Q: What's something people may not know about you?
"My three best friends and I biked the Great Alleghany Passage this past summer, which is a 150-mile bike trail that starts in Cumberland, MD and ends in the heart of Pittsburgh. We took four days to do it and had the best time of our lives. We are all hoping to do it again this fall."
