Meet the Faculty and Staff
Willie Thomas
Willie Thomas is one of the College's registrars who began working at Delaware Tech in 2004. Prior to coming to Delaware Tech, Thomas worked in banking for 16 years. After that, he worked as a housing specialist and AmeriCorps Coordinator with a public housing authority. In 1999, he started working in higher education as a technical assistant at Delaware State University, before eventually becoming associate registrar. Outside of work, Thomas is very involved in his church, and has a great interest in history – especially untold history. He is also an avid follower of current events. In the future, he hopes to see through some of the technology initiatives going on at Delaware Tech and eventually reach the ultimate goal of retirement.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Delaware Tech?
"My favorite thing is working daily with the Registration and Admissions staff, a wonderful group of people, and teaming with the other campus Registrars to attain unified processes to help our students and staff."
Q: Why was it important for you to work at Delaware Tech?
"I believe Delaware Tech has the potential to have a great impact on students that otherwise may not have the opportunity. It is important to me to contribute to their success."
Q: Describe your first day at Delaware Tech. What was that experience like?
"I was really unsure of what to expect. However, I was welcomed aboard first by Dean Paul Selby as well as the staff in Registration. Dean Selby introduced me to everyone in Student Services and walked me over to the Dean of Instruction office where I was introduced to Dean Judy Caldwell as well as some of the faculty. Needless to say, I saw a lot of faces, remembered few names, but felt welcomed by all."
Q: What changes have you seen in yourself since you started working here?
"My knowledge of higher education has grown. The Registrar's role and responsibilities have evolved in many ways at the College. The Registrars are now included on front end of many initiatives rather than at the end. Our contribution is more valued than in earlier years. As a result, my confidence has increased and I am much more comfortable in my position."
Q: Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Delaware Tech thus far?
"While I do not have one favorite memory at Delaware Tech, my favorite time of the year is graduation time. Our office services students when they first come in the Delaware Tech door and throughout their matriculation, therefore, it is always inspiring to see the students reach their goals, despite some of their obstacles."
Q: What's something people may not know about you?
"My wife and I are the parents of seven girls and three boys. Among them, we have one Doctorate, four Master's, and two Bachelor's degrees with our youngest son presently being a senior at Georgia Tech. We are thankful for them as well as our 21 grandchildren."
