DOVER – When Cindy Savage agreed to coach Delaware Tech’s Women’s Volleyball team, hopes were high for a winning season. The team struggled through last year with a 0-15 finish. But that was the past; this year, things were much different.
This year, the Lady Hawks were seeded number one in the Region XIX Tournament, and won their Championship game against Lackawanna Community College in New Jersey Oct. 27! Now it’s off to the Districts at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y., Nov. 3.
The key to this year’s team is a combination of a strong sophomore class and an even stronger freshman class. The chemistry of the team is a direct result of new head coach Cindy Savage’s efforts. Coach Savage worked especially hard this off-season to bring in a big recruiting class and also brought back three sophomores, who were key to the team coach Savage was building. During her first year, Savage has surpassed the expectations of everyone involved to bring the Region XIX championship back to Delaware Technical Community College.
This year the Lady Hawks accomplished the common goal of winning a championship and moving on to the next round, but some Lady Hawks went above and beyond. Macela Younger and Elizabeth Cahill were selected to the All-Region XIX First Team and Macela Younger also received MVP of the Region XIX Tournament. Jenna Racz and Soyini Huggett were named to the Region XIX all-tournament team. Now the Lady Hawks hope to continue their remarkable year as they travel Monroe College to compete in the District play-offs Nov. 3.
