Andrea Villalobos, a dental hygiene major at Delaware Tech, is a first-generation college student and a recipient of the SEED Scholarship. She says the scholarship has helped her to further her career without having to worry about the financial strain of paying for college.
Villalobos chose Delaware Tech because of its welcoming atmosphere. She praises the inclusive environment and the many resources offered to help students succeed, such as the tutoring centers, financial aid, and the wellness center.
"I am extremely grateful for all of the stuff and how much care they put into your education," she said. "Teachers become like friends, they are so understanding and share a common goal, and that is to make you a successful professional in any field!"
As a first-generation college student, Villalobos said she wasn't sure how the college process worked. "There was no one in my family that would know how to answer my questions or guide me, so I had to figure most out on my own," she said. "I made a mistake of applying to another college that I could not afford and got myself into debt, forcing me to work two full-time jobs. When I found Del Tech, it was such a blessing for me as from day one my counselor guided me every step of the way."
Villalobos chose dental hygiene as a major because she likes to be involved in helping the community and making an impact on their quality of life. "I believe dental education and prevention are a major issue in the country, especially in low-income communities, and I would like to be a part of making change."
Villalobos said she has seen herself mature and grow since starting at Delaware Tech. She has enjoyed her classes, and the connections she has made with classmates. After graduation she will work full-time as a dental hygienist. "I would love to find an office that likes to participate in community programs and be able to help where we are most needed."
Villalobos credits Delaware Tech for helping her to find her dream career where she can help others, have fun, and be herself.
"I would choose Delaware Tech a million more times if I could."
