Debbie Alston-Collazo
Debbie Alston-Collazo, a human services student, wants to be a "contributor of change in our society. I have learned many hard life lessons and the knowledge obtained through those lessons can possibly help someone that is lost - like I felt at one time."
Debbie was in a car accident in August 2020, just before her classes began. "I had to readjust my life to make it work. Even though classes are up and running, I am still facing the never-ending therapy, PTSD, doctor's appointments, and a full-time work schedule." Debbie is also a parent. "I have to make sure I am taken care of on top of all the other responsibilities."
Coming to Delaware Tech, Debbie said, has made her a "more confident student and individual. I manage my time more efficiently and work harder to achieve my goals. I know now that this was the right choice for me."
Debbie advises her fellow students to be confident in their goals. "Don't let anything or anyone dampen your vision. Let that voice inside give you the confidence to push through."
There have been times when Debbie was doubtful, but her instructor, Marissa Lelii, gave her a confidence boost. "She told me I was smarter than I knew and that I could achieve anything if I put my heart and mind into it. She was the teacher that gave me the benefit of my own doubt and never gave up on me."
After earning her associate degree from Delaware Tech, Debbie would like to work as a drug and alcohol counselor. She hopes to own her own business someday.
