Guanina P. Lopez

"For me, education is freedom," said Guanina P. Lopez, a human services & drug and alcohol counseling student. To Guanina, the most important part of being in college is serving as a role model to her daughter. "Anything is possible when your will is stronger than any obstacle life may bring."

Being featured on Student Spotlight is motivating to Guanina; it inspires her to keep striving to reach her goals. "It is an honor to represent other students who are like me and have a second chance to attend college and accomplish old and new goals."

When choosing a college, Guanina knew she wanted to be part of an institution that cared about its students. "Delaware Tech is well-known throughout the state, and I knew they invested in student growth and student success. As an adult learner returning back to school after almost two decades, I felt that Delaware Tech would be able to provide me with the proper support and challenge I needed to learn and succeed."

As a first-generation adult learner and a single mother living with a disability, Guanina had to learn how to balance motherhood, recovery, self-care, and her academic goals. "Overall, I am still learning about myself, and every day I discover something new. The resources at Delaware Tech have helped me overcome some of the aspects that I considered limitations."

Guanina's experience at the College has been transformational. "My confidence and leadership skills have been unleashed. I am pretty optimistic for my future."

After graduation, Guanina would like to direct a residential rehabilitation center for women and their children, while creating partnerships with different institutions. "I don't think I am finished with education yet; Delaware Tech may see me again for another degree!"
