It was important for Bianca Garcia-Martinez to go to college because she wanted to make her mother proud. “All she ever wanted was for her children to get a good education and have a good life. I want to make her dreams come true.”

Garcia-Martinez chose Delaware Tech to accomplish this goal because the campus is close by and affordable. As a Pell Grant recipient, she feels comfortable knowing that her tuition won’t take a toll on her financially.

Human services was the best fit when selecting a major because Garcia-Martinez knew she wanted to do something that involved helping people in need. Although she isn’t sure yet what specific role she envisions for her dream career, she knows she’s on the right track to figuring it out.

At first, it was challenging for Garcia-Martinez to juggle her responsibilities between school, work, and maintaining her mental health. Since recognizing the need for balance in her life, she has learned how to cope and has become more responsible in the process.

Her favorite memory of her time at Delaware Tech so far has been meeting her first college friend. 

“We were lost looking for our class and we realized we were both looking for the same one. We sat next to each other once we found it and we have been friends since,” Garcia-Martinez said.

Garcia-Martinez’s advice for students who want to enhance their experience at the College is to ask for help when they need it. “Everyone I have talked to when I needed help has been nothing but helpful - even for the simplest things!”

After graduating from the human services program, she plans to transfer to Delaware State University with a connected degree in social work.
