Nicholas Phillips
Human Services
Initially, Nicholas Phillips thought pursuing a degree in business was his best option so he could guarantee being financially healthy in the future.
"However, I quickly realized business wasn't my passion," Phillips said. "I really wanted to help others. That is what inspired me to choose human services instead."
Neither of Phillips' parents graduated from college, so earning a college degree gave him a sense of sustainability and independence. As he began taking human services classes, Phillips said he saw an increase in his empathy and passion for care of others that he hadn't experienced when he was in high school.
"I have also found myself becoming more responsible and better with time management with work, school, and internships," he said. "I must have good time management skills or risk getting behind."
Phillips utilized the SEED Scholarship to attend Delaware Tech. He said he probably wouldn't have been able to afford college without it.
"Having the SEED Scholarship allowed me to focus on my education and not finances, which allowed for the success I had," Phillips said.
Phillips praised his instructors and the curriculum at Delaware Tech for his success. For new students or students looking to enhance their experience at the College, Phillips said having strong communication skills is key.
"The majority of instructors, advisors, and faculty members have all wanted what was best for me," he said. "Don't be afraid to ask them questions or have them provide feedback. These are the individuals that will make you stronger and provide the important connections we hear about so much as students."
Phillips said he also gained job skills and interpersonal communication skills through the human services program's internship process.
"The entire internship process was an invaluable experience that I am so grateful for," he said. "Having the opportunity to get real world experience in the field provided me not only with a glimpse into what working with people is like, but more insight into what I want to do with my degree."
After graduation, Phillips plans to utilize the Connected Degree with Wilmington University and pursue his bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences. Eventually, he would like to obtain his master's degree in higher education.
Phillips said he would like to work at a college, potentially as an academic counselor or admissions officer. He would also consider working in student affairs or instruction.
