Eliana Nunez
Biological Sciences
When they were teens, Eliana Nunez’s parents emigrated from Ecuador to the United States. As she grew up with her siblings, she realized how hard her parents were working to make sure to take care of their family. That determination and drive was passed down to Nunez, who has set her educational goals as a way to honor her family.
“I saw their determination to succeed in this country,” Nunez said. “It was something I admired and made me want to do the best I can, knowing they’ve done the best for me and my siblings.”
Nunez is attending Delaware Tech as a biological sciences major with the ultimate goal of attending dental school and becoming an orthodontist. She said her smile was transformed when she had braces when she was younger, and she’d like to do the same for others.
“A major in biological sciences was one that would properly equip me with the appropriate knowledge to be able to qualify and succeed in this post-graduate program,” Nunez said. “I have always had a love for medicine and the more time I spent taking classes related to medicine, I realized I had passion for dentistry. I aspire one day to become an orthodontist who gives back to her community and continues a high standard of dentistry in Delaware.”
While she’s known what career she has wanted to pursue for a while now, Nunez wasn’t entirely sure she would stay in Delaware for her education. She weighed the pros and cons, and ultimately determined attending Delaware Tech, and utilizing the SEED Scholarship, made the most financial sense. She said it quickly became apparent to her that she made the right decision.
“I have been able to make connections with my instructors and classmates,” Nunez said. “The art of networking with people my age who have similar aspirations has truly pushed me to be the best version of myself. I also know that because of our small class sizes, I have been able to form close relationships with my classmates, and that has created an environment of accountability and encouragement.
“Delaware Tech has helped me realize that to truly succeed, the best way is to learn from the people around you.”
Nunez specifically pointed out how the hands-on learning and the skills she is learning have been something that will help her as she furthers her education. She has also been able to participate in scientific research and see things as a real scientist, which she wasn’t expecting.
After graduation, Nunez plans to transfer to the University of Delaware to pursue a degree in biology before enrolling in a dental school.
